Polls show Yingluck is the most popular Minister

    By Bangkok Pundit
    Aug 17, 2011

Part 1 looking at a Suan Dusit poll is here. There is a new ABAC poll that surveyed 2,412 people in 17 provinces (Bangkok, Pathum Thani, Chanthaburi, Lop Buri, Chon Buri, Phichit, Phetchabun, Chiang Mai, Mukdahan, Nong Khai, Chaiyaphum, Surin, Udon Thani, Khon Kaen, Phatthalung, Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat).
In future posts – as have done in the past – BP will include the survey methodology, but will wait until the EC updates their website and there is a spreadsheet with the full election results available so can compare the performance of the pre-election polls and exit polls for accuracy.*

Q1: The percentage of people who accept/agree with the new Cabinet Ministers (แสดงค่าร้อยละของตัวอย่างที่ระบุ การยอมรับต่อคณะรัฐมนตรีในรัฐบาลชุดใหม่)
    1. Yingluck Shinawatra, 79.9%
    2. Tourism and Sports Minister Chumpol Silapa-archa, 58.9%
    3. Defence Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapha and Justice Minister Pracha Promnok, 58.4% each
    5. Deputy Prime Minister Pol General Kowit Wattana, 57.7%
    6. Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit and Science and Technology Minister Plodprasob Suraswadi, 57.1% each
    8. Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Kittirat na Ranong, 57%
    9. Information and Communications Technology Minister Group Capt Anudith Nakornthap, 56.2%
    10. Deputy Finance Minister Wirun Techapaiboon and Deputy Transport Minister Chaj Kuladilok, 55.7%
    12. Deputy Public Health Minister Torpong Chaiyasarn, 55.2%
    13. Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Theera Wongsamut, 54.9%
    14. Public Health Minister Witthaya Buranasiri, 54.8%
    15. Finance Minister Thirachai Bhuwanatnaranuban Minister of Finance, 54.0%
    16. Energy Minister Pichai Naripthaphan, 53.9%
    17. Minister of Foreign Affairs Surapong Tovichakchaikul, 53.5%
    18. Deputy Commerce Minister Siriwat Kachornprasart, 53%
    19. Social Development and Human Security Minister Santi Promphat, 45.2% [BP: Big drop]

    21. Industry Minister Wannarat Charnnukul, 44.9%

    24. Education Minister Vorawat Uea-apinyakul, 44.4%
    25. ACM Transport Minister Sukhamphol Suwannathat, 44.3%
    26. Deputy PM Chalerm and Culture Minister Sukumol Khunpleum, 44.1% each
    28. PM’s Office Minister Surawit Khonsomboon, 44%

    32. Natural Resources and Environment Minister Preecha Rengsomboonsuk, 43.6%

    36. PM’s Office Minister Kritsana Seehalak, 41.6%
NOTE: Out of time constraints have excluded Deputy Ministers from below No. 20
BP: Accept/agree with does not necessarily indicate support/like/favour although clearly the higher you rate the better it is. Perhaps, one could say it is approval rating although that is not quite accurate either. Nevertheless, one could approve of the job the person is doing or accept them without necessarily supporting them. There is a separate question regarding support and 71.8% say they support Yingluck (นิยมชอบ) so you can take the 71.8% support figure or the 79.9% approval/acceptance ratings are very high. There is such a huge gap between Yingluck and everyone else. Yes, she wouldn’t have got the position except for Thaksin, but it is not just because of her surname she is doing so well – see below for more. Nevertheless, what goes up, can also come down…..

Surapong doesn’t do as badly. In some ways, if Thaksin doesn’t cause problems, Cambodia is unlikely (although this depends on Hun Sen’s mood…) to be a problem, the Defence Minister Yuthasak because of his ties is likely to handle relations with Cambodia more than one would expect, and Surapong could easily gain some kudos by showing up at Phnom Penh and bringing back Ratree and Veera, the two PAD affiliated activists who are in jail there. The problem is when things go wrong that the perception will be, could someone with more experience have done better. Unless the government allows him some wins – such as with getting back the two Thais in Cambodia – and puts in an experienced former Ambassador as Vice-Minister/personal adviser then problems are likely to continue to surround Surapong.

Anyone else above 50% is ok, but those below could be in trouble – Chalerm is probably an exception as well he has a vocal support base and while he is hated by many, he is loved by many (albeit haters outnumber ‘lovers’, for want of a better word). Both the PM’s Office Ministers score very badly.

    Q2. Top 10 Ministers that “civil servants” will accept/agree excluding the PM
    A. Yuthasak Sasiprapha, 58.3%
    B. Kowit Wattana, 58.1%
    C. Pracha Promnok, 57.5%
    D. Yongyuth Wichaidit, 57.3%
    E. Plodprasob Suraswadi, 54.9%
    F. Kittirat Na. Ranong, 54.9%
BP: Yuthasak will deal with the military and Cambodia. As long as things are stable on those fronts, he will do well. On one hand, it really doesn’t matter what civil servants think of the government, but it does in the sense that if Puea Thai want to implement their policy they need for the civil servants including the military to at least be quiet.

    Q3. Top 10 Ministers that “private sector employees” will accept/agree excluding the PM
    1. Kittirat Na. Ranong, 61.1%
    2. Thirachai Bhuwanatnaranuban, 57.8%
    3. Kowit Wattana, 55.1%
    4. Wirun Techapaiboon, 54.3%
    5. Yongyuth Wichaidit, 53.6%
    6. Yuthasak Sasiprapha, 52.8%
    7. Pracha Promnok, 52.2%
    8. Chumpol Silapa-archa, 51.9%
    9. Plodprasob Suraswadi, 50.9%
    10. Surapong Tovichakchaikul, 50.1%
BP: Two economic ministers and even Wirun Techapaiboon (because of his family name?) are unsurprisingly first and second. They will need to deal with the private sector over the minimum wage which is the main policy test for the government.

    Surapong doesn’t too badly.

Q4. Points out of 10 for the overal perception of the new Cabinet in areas of responsibility
    1. Economic affairs, 6.16 points
    2. Security affairs, 5.83 points
    3. Solving social problems, 5.73 points
    4. Honesty/morality, 5.44 points
    5. Overall, 6.1 points
BP: It is clearly the economic team which is the strong point and this is the strong point.

    Q5. Compared between Yingluck and Thaksin who do you support?
    1. Yingluck, 44.9%
    2. Thaksin, 23.8%
    3. No opinion, 31.3%
BP: If Yingluck’s popularity was derived solely from Thaksin then you wouldn’t get the above. Perhaps, the person who comes in second may reflect on whether he is helping or hindering the person who comes in first….

*btw, if anyone knows when the EC data is released in Excel format – like they did for the 2007 general election – then please let BP know – either by e-mail: bangkokpundit[at]gmail.com or twitter [at]bangkokpundit -

That's the real reason. Your embellishments. I wanted you to finally admit you embellish your "reports" and at last you did just that. I and others have known for a long time that you "embellish" and that your strident "neutrality" was nothing more than a lie, now everybody who reads these threads knows just that, and they know not because I accuse you of embellishment but because you blatantly admit it.

Your childish paranoia is shameful. I have no interest in just "having a go" at you. If I wanted to do that I wouldn't even bother including your posts in my replies. I wanted to expose you as a liar and a fraud because I despise liars and frauds like you, Thaihome, and Buksida, nothing more than that.
    Wow! Lost it much DrB?

I embellished my post, not the news, you do understand the difference, right?....jeez, you are on the edge....

If you despise liars, do you suffer from self-loathing?

"Childish paranoia" . A year of never-ending, week-in, week-out, attacks by you, at me. It isn't paranoia, childish or otherwise, just a statement of fact. Often in the past it was every day.

You never, ever attack people such as Calgary, Nostromo and others of the Thaksin fan-club, even though they post the most ridiculous rubbish on a daily basis, full of stuff so far removed from reality as to be utterly bizarre. Some of it is lies too!!!!! In other words, you only attack those who disagree with you and have the *temerity* to challenge your vacuous, insipid, hate-filled claptrap.

The evidence is here for all to see.

The *only* people you attack in the news are me, Buksida and TH. But we are the liars and frauds? Don't think so, but keep believing it if it makes you feel better and confirms your deluded, bitter existence. Gotta hate someone, right DrB? Purge the inner demons....Ahhh, catharsis....

Really, DrB, you couldn't make this up....you expose yourself as a liar by your above post.

So, do you suffer from self-loathing?

Did you start "taking the piss" before or after you typed ”Sorry, but I searched all Japanese media. . ."? Maybe as an American I really am irony-challenged.

Yes, I think irony challenged may be the correct response here....think about it....the "humour" was fairly obvious. I was echoing your earlier post to me, the one where you had a problem with me saying Thaksin was "mouthing off" in the Japanese media (and indeed he was, which you have yet to acknowledge).

    Cheers.

I made the wrong decisions? When? Where?

I call people the Thaksin fan-club, because there are obviously Thaksin supporters here.

I have a mission? To do what? To what ends? For what purpose?

    Just asking.

In your condition, you dont see or hear the signals that are right.

Please calm down. Let all your thoughts go away. Then you are all right.

Thaksin supporters might be your friends, for democracy. Oh you did not want that? Fuck

Nor will calling anyone who disagrees with you a PAD-supporter (not necessarily referring to you personally, but it happens a lot on TD)- if it works one way, it's got to work both ways- the 'You're a Yellow!' 'You're a Red!' crap gets pretty ridiculous at times- it's possible to disagree on a particular issue without agreeing with (or disparaging) a particular party's entire ideology.

Indeed a fair point. Or for that matter, it is quite possible to be sympathetic to the Reds without being a pal of Thaksin, or even 'yellow' without liking the Dem's. Lets allow for the fact that there has been elements of bombast from several quarters shall we?

I daresay the poster that said every Thai and farang supporter of the Reds should be killed was exaggerating (or mentally unsound), and accusations of all Democrat supporters being Fascists are similarly bombastic.

Thailands 'loyal opposition' has not taken long to show it's true stripes though, has it? Japan is Thailands largest foreign investor, so where is the upside in pulling them into a domestic spat over Thaksin? Apart from the fact that he is not travelling on a Thai passport, and the 'pro Thaksin' camp is now the lawful government of Thailand after a resounding democratic victory, there is no international warrant for his arrest.

It seems the loyal Democrats are quite content to continue damaging Thailand's international standing and reputation even while in opposition. Where does such "loyalty" emanate from? Sour grapes makes poor whine.

I agree with that. Why some people, and me personally I can not speak for others, feel inclined to emphasize some things, might have something to do with british virtue of doing it for the underdog. When the right is on our side. There is so heavy presence of anti-Thaksin people and the plain propaganda they say deserves opposition.

This little gem alone, suggests the slanted nature of this Suan Dusit Poll.

Just because the Amart is frothing at the mouth as their little Foreign Service Club is being invaded, this poll miraculously follows suit.

The glad-handers and cocktail crowd from this club of lifers is afraid this new Foreign Minister may make them touch ground - similar to what Thaksin did - with his orders to get out there and flog Thai products, especially OTOP stuff.

This new Minister also has a Foreign Trade bent to him, so it is likely these Amart sourced lifers are faced with some unpleasand duties with, heaven forbid, measurable performance standards.

Damn...it was much more fun fighting with Cambodia and chasing Thaksin.

    I inquired about Mingkwan.

Some reasons for his lack of prominence that were stated to me was:

    > Primary concerning his penchant for "sucking up".

    >Lack of Thaksin trust. He even threatened to go off and create a separate party at one time when things didn't go his way. Somewhat erratic this way.

    >Another cloud in his history, is that the bureaucracy "waltzed him around the bush" one time on a commercial, rice marketing thing. His lack of understanding and how he was didled by the bureaucracy resulted in him apologising for something.

    >There are many other prominent Politicians from the PTP side of the political divide who were also passed over. Mingkwan is just one of them.

    >The idea that floated around for awhile that he was considered an alternative leader to Yingluck was never considered seriously by anyone significant.

There were several other reasons that were speculated about, but the primary one is the first one. Just whose man is he, was a question?

We will hear a lot more about this "sucking up" issue. It is much bigger than people realize. There may be a significant electoral victory here, but the dominant element of the Amart is still going merrily on its' way.

This remains front-and-center with the Red Shirts and will not go away. Any Red Shirt/UDD leader who fails to grasp this reality is doing so at their own peril.

These foreign journalists just can't get enough of aping the Amart media.

Adding the qualifier of "politically motivated sentence by a military coup based court" would be the correct statement.

I don't know who the hell this Ehrlich is, but he is obviously in the pocket of the Amart.

If you read the rest of the article, it is suffused with PADite thinking.

^^ A lot of that about Mingkwan makes sense.

I think his, quite frankly, lame performance in the censure debate against the Dem's earlier this year also didn't help. It was hyped as an opportunity to nail the Abhisit government and he was leading the charge. In the end it was rather embarrassing.

Chalerm storming out in a huff probably didn't help either. But now he's been rewarded with being in charge of the drug campaign and *cough* justice....

Chalerm in charge of justice is possibly one of the scariest things to have come about so far from this new government. A fox in charge of the chicken coup is something that springs to mind...

Surapong promises to put focus on trade

Surapong Towijakchaikul said yesterday he agreed to become foreign minister to help the nation put greater emphasis on trade with other countries.

He made his comments at the start of his first day at the Foreign Ministry to an army of reporters. The media, members of the public and the Democrat Party have been critical of Mr Surapong, saying he was appointed to the position to help ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra return to the country and return his diplomatic passport to help facilitate the fugitive former premier's globetrotting.

But Mr Surapong insisted yesterday he had never talked to ministry executives about returning Thaksin's diplomatic passport.

He said the Yingluck Shinawatra government had no such policy and that the government had assigned him to help build peace and engage in constructive dialogue with neighbouring countries such as Cambodia.

"It is really a tough job, but I'm not worried," he said. "Although I am seen as the worst minister [in the government], I will do my best."

Mr Surapong brought a statue replica of revered monk Phra Puttajarn To Phromrangsi in meditation and a picture of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) with him to the ministry yesterday. Shortly after arriving at work, the ministry's senior staff briefed him on his duties and work.

Mr Surapong said he would meet with ministry officials today to discuss the Thai-Cambodian problem, including the prior government's revocation of the 2001 Memorandum of Understanding on the overlapping maritime area in the Gulf of Thailand as proposed by former foreign minister Kasit Piromya and Thailand's withdrawal from the World Heritage Convention.

He plans to submit recommendations from the meeting to the cabinet for consideration next week, he said.

The Pheu Thai MP from Chiang Mai denied he was appointed foreign minister because Thaksin supported him.

He said he was appointed to the post after receiving full backing from Prime Minister Yingluck and the party's executive committee.

They saw he had experience in trade and Ms Yingluck was especially interested in foreign trade policy, he said.

Mr Surapong also insisted it had not been a government priority to help Thaksin get a visa to enter Japan but the former premier was invited by the Japanese private sector to speak there.

"Chalerm" and "justice" two words that shouldn't be in a sentence that doesn't include one or another form of the word "escape."

I saw the "Nation" newspaper on a newstand screaming a hugely printed front page dealing with this Thaksin-Japan thing.

The PAD media really thinks it can maintain its' obsessive minority agenda even after dismally losing an election.

The electorate knew full-well the paranoid anti-Thakisn stuff perpetrated by this tyranical ruling minority and turfed them out.

But they think they can still flog this stuff.

That headline was pathetic - as if anyone cared.

Quite simple really.....A PADite chain of reasoning masquerading as nuetrality.

Another technique used by the PADites, is to create all these fictitious organizations of so-called activists.

The give-away is usually when they call it the "people's" something or other, as in "The Peoples Network of Anti-nose Hair protest group", suggesting they are some sort of well-entrenched and previously existing group of activists......When in fact they are just the PAD.

Their last creation was something called "The Peoples Network against Poverty", who supposedly were all up-in-the-air about ensuring the Y Govt. lived up to its' election promises. They even got a few PADites out on the street pretending to be protesters from such a phoney organization.

Why is it that these PADites need to hide behind nuetrality and phony organizations is a mystery.

Either they are embarrassed being who they are, or think that nuetrality and previously unknown activist groups are more believable than the PAD.....I dunno.

The worst thing that can happen to a Politician who is losing, is when the leading politician refuses to engage.

Losing Politicians need 'bite-back' in order for them to gain some traction. Abhisit found that out, and now the Amart is suffering the same plight.

In USA Politics, Romney is playing that game. He is not engaging with any of his opponents, and it drives them crazy.
