About 20 people wounded in insurgent attacks in Narathiwat province
    วันอาทิตย์ ที่ 20 ก.พ. 2554

NARATHIWAT, Feb 20 – About 20 persons were wounded by a shooting and car bomb by presumed insurgents Saturday night in the trouble-plagued southern province of Narathiwat.

The first incident occurred at a karaoke restaurant where two female workers were injured in a shooting late Saturday night. Half an hour later, while the police were investigating the restaurant shooting, a bomb went off 100 metres away, wounding 20 persons.

The police said the bombers placed explosives inside a car with a fake licence plate. The bomb was believed to have been detonated with a cell-phone.

One of the victims is now in critical condition as she is receiving treatment in an intensive care unit of a hospital in Narathiwat province.

The latest incident occurred in Narathiwat when an unknown number of insurgents fired at another karaoke restaurant with an M79 automatic rifle, damaging rooms on the third floor and shattering glass windows and doors.

No casualties were reported as employees of the restaurant inside it at the time of the incident. Police said they believed the gunmen fired from the lawn of an ice-making factory which is situated opposite the restaurant.

Some 4,000 people have been killed in the troubled southern provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat since insurgents launched renewed fighting against the government in early January 2004.

Karaoke bars in Narathiwat suspend business after Saturday attack

Scores of karaoke bars in Narathiwat suspended their business on Sunday after scores of people were injured in an insurgent attack at a karaoke bar in Muang district on Saturday night.

Unknown gunmen had opened fire and injured two women working at Maya Karaoke Bar in Soi 21/1 on Na Kakhon Road at about 7.20pm. Police then went to inspect the scene. At 7.45pm, the bomb went off in front of a massage shop on Suriyapradit Road, 100 metres from the scene of the shooting, just after a team of police passed.

It injured a further 15 people. Four nearby commercial buildings and 12 motorcycles were also damaged.

Following the attack on Saturday, some 60 karaoke bars in Narathiwat's Muang district on Sunday announced they closed their service out of fear that their business may be a target again.

Scores of businesses close after shootings and bombing in southern Thailand

NARATHIWAT, THAILAND : Several businesses in Thailand's southern province of Narathiwat, including about 60 karaoke bars, remained closed on Sunday following Saturday night's shootings and car bomb, Thailand's MCOT news agency reported.

Two females employed at a karaoke bar were injured after a shooting took place, and while local authorities were investigating the situation, about 30 minutes later, a car bomb exploded around 100 meters away from the initial scene, injuring at least 17 people at a restaurant.

As a result, one of the injured has been reported in critical condition at a local hospital. The bomb, which was placed in a car with fake license plates, was believed to be detonated by a cell phone. Several buildings and vehicles in the surrounding areas were also damaged.

Then, an unknown number of gunmen equipped with M79 automatic rifles opened fire against another karaoke bar, causing damage by shattering windows, walls, and doors. The bar's employees were all inside during the attack, and no casualties were reported.

Since 2004, around 4,000 people have been killed in Thailand's southern regions of Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat, as local insurgent groups renewed their fighting efforts against the government.
