Eight people have been killed after they were thrown from a passenger van in which they were travelling when it was involved in an accident with another car on the Don Muang elevated tollway.

The eight, four men and four women, were thrown out of the van and over the tollway wall to fall on the ground below. Seven others were injured.

The accident took place about 10pm on the inbound lanes of the tollway near Kasetsart University.

It was the second deadly passenger van accident in two months. Eight van passengers were killed on Oct 31 when the van in which they were travelling fell from an elevated expressway in Bang Sue district.

Eight killed in grisly tollway accident

    By THE NATION

Eight people were killed last night when their passenger van was involved in a crash with a sedan on a tollway section of the Vibhavadi Rangsit highway

Seven other passengers trapped inside the van - Number Tor 11827 with 13-795 BKK licence plate - were wounded and admitted to the nearby Vibhavadi hospital.

Some of the bodies of the victims, who were flung out of the van by the impact of the crash, were seen hanging from a pedestrian flyover, while bodies were recovered from a canal adjacent to the nearby Kasetsart University.

Initial police reports said the sedan, a white Honda Civic with Dor Chada Wor Wan 8761 BKK licence plate, rammed the back of the van, sending it crashing into a streetlight pole on the inbound elevated tollway. The eight victims were flung out from a five-metre height.

The accident prompted police to close traffic on frontage roads, which subsequently led to heavy traffic congestion. The dead included five male adults and three female adults. The identities of those killed and injured were not available at press time.

I see it all the time, motocy and city bus too, they don't slow down

there is an immediate danger in front of them, a logical human being would slow down, but the little monkey creatures don't

I really think they are dumb beyond normal levels, they simply don't understand anything, probably this has to do with a serious lack of education about anything

    Another crash reported this morning...

Rama2 inbound early this morning, a pick-up truck crashed into flyover's base, killed 5 at scene, another 2 at hosp. #fm96.5

So that's 13 killed in 2 accidents, just in Bangkok....now I can see how Thailand has one of the, if not the, worst traffic fatalities records in the world. 12,000 a year...!

This one's awful too, I always wondered what happens to people in the back of a pickup in case of the slightest mishap.

However, this was a private vehicle. What makes the vans particularly awful is that they're public transportation -- people who use them are unable to do anything about crazy driving.

I hope Thai government will do something about this. Much as we like to bash them, Thais not entirely clueless when it comes to managing traffic -- Bangkok went from being a perpetual parking lot back in the 1990s to occasional heavy but manageable traffic these days. Van operators are small fry in terms of profits, so regulating them shouldn't be too difficult.

Foking kidding mate, its too busy counting there corruption money.

Besides that they don't give a fok how many die as there's 65 million of them floating around and the thousands that die every year on the roads is a piss in the wind.

The disabled ones just get packed off to the family so the ongoing medical costs aint like it is in the west.

Tail gateing is the national sport, one man in a Honda in Phetchaburi with a Bangkok plate waived a gun out the window at me as he went passed ,up to that point there was no way he could get past so i was not stopping him .

road design is just as big a killer as the stupidity of the drivers and the laziness of the police here.

sharp radii to curves, the thoughtless placement of lamp posts, barriers, concrete dividers, open drains, ditches, vision blocking signage, poor lighting, etc.etc.etc.

what cant be changed is the fatalistic attitude of thais, by just asking a passenger to put their seat belt on or a driver to slow down you are seen as invoking the spirits to come along and create an accident.

As I experience the driving skills here in Th it appears to me that the drivers can only see as far as their front bumper! Their ability to "plan ahead" is absolute NIL. When turning either left or right on a multi-lane road you will always find them in the wrong lane - necessitating the crossing of two lanes in less than a car's length!

Yes, she survived, it appears she collided with the van....she is 18 years old...! I wonder if her inexperience was the cause...

    Some more details....from Twitter.....

"Of the 8 deceased, 1 struck a pedestrian bridge, 2 landed in canal, 5 hit the road below."

You have to remember most people pass their driving tests at 17 and continue from there, most Thai's just pay at 17 and continue from there, I passed at 17, and at the age of around 24 I learned how to drive properly, took 6 months as I was a crap driver with too many bad habits, couldn't even go round a corner properly at speed, so I learnt and paid the money.
