The "Three Tyrants" Field Marshall Thanom Kittikachorn (pictured), his son Col. Narong and Field Marshall Prapass Charusathiara's abuse of power was the main catalyst that led to the October 1973 student uprising.

Under the leadership of student activist Thirayuth Boonmi the National Student Centre of Thailand protested for a revision of the constitution.
Later Khun Thirayuth was himself arrested, which led to further protests.

Tensions came to a head when thousands of students gathered in protest at Thammasat University and Ratchadamnoen Avenue.

Many of the students carried signs depicting His Majesty the King, who they felt supported their actions.

The student protestors were joined by famers and labourers who would in later years suffer the wrath of rightist groups for their involvement.

On October 13, 1973 the students were finally released and the protests seemed to be over.
However, unable to deal with the crowds effectively the police turned to their weapons to control the burgeoning mass.

Later the army was brought in and opened fire on the students, forcing them to duck for cover.

In response the protestors used what weapons they find to respond to the ongoing violence.

Some commandeered garbage trucks to ram into oncoming tanks.

To help resolve matters, His Majesty the King opened Chitralada Palace as a place of refuge for the protestors.
In this picture is Her Royal Highness the Princess Mother.

Once the violence subsided, those arrested were taken away by security forces along with the bodies of the dead.
To this day it is not known where they were taken.

    "Red-shirts" propose 5 requests to Thai gov't
    October 14, 2010

The co-leader of a "red-shirt" branch, held a seminar and some other activities on Thursday in Bangkok to commemorate the bloody Oct. 14 incident and proposed five requests to the Thai government.

A lot of "red-shirt" protesters participated in the activities which were organized under the collaboration of Red Power magazine and People Channel news station.

During the seminar, Somyot Pruksakasemsuk, the leader of the 24th of June Democracy Group, a political branch of "red-shirts" movement, presented five requests to the government: releasing all detained "red-shirt" members in order to create genuine reconciliation; justice reform; economic reform to bring about income equality; agrarian reform leading to fairer possession of lands; and ceasing media distortion and threat.

Somyot also demands the Independent Fact-Finding Panel, the National Reform Committee and National Human Rights Commission not to be exploited by Abhisit government.

On Oct. 14, 1973, thousands of university students gathered in Bangkok demanding the military government to step down before dozens of people were killed as the troops started to use live rounds to suppress them.

The anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship, or "red-shirt," staged prolonged demonstration from March to May this year in Bangkok and some other provinces, demanding the government to resolve parliament and arrange snap election. Their demonstration ended on May 19 when the government resorted to military for dispersal. Around 90 people were killed and almost 2,000 were injured in the clashes between troops and the protesters.

Unfortunately, most do. Lest we forget the numerous events and periods, regarding temporary Thai history, that have led to thousands of "disappearances". Nice OP Mid. Kudos.

    ....

Just to put some perspective on these demands. Here is some excerpts from the September 2010 issue of Red Power magazine of which the speaker, Somyot Pruksakasemsuk, is the editor.
    TH

    From Red Power, September, 2010
The title reads: Does Veera betray in deed?

[This refers to the widespread impression that Veera betrayed Thaksin's orders to fight for immediate elections during the Red Shirt rallies and agreed to a government plan to call elections in November for an end to the rallies.]

From Red Power, September, 2010 - The new Red publications are as provocative as ever. Here the Prime Minster is pictured as a blood-stained Hitler.

    From Red Power, September, 2010
The back cover of the Red Power magazine reads: Release all UDD political prisoners - the 4 year anniversary of the September 19 coup 2006 - the big gathering Sunday September 19, 2010 in Chiangmai - contact 081-595-8295 089-500-7232

^Interesting, the Hitler picture alone would cause an enormous outcry in the west.

Even more interesting, is the deeper reference to Hitler. As such touch upon attention is not of a Asian consciousness as these archetypal notions are within the Western frame of mind - the Hitler/Nazis subtleties. Mind, it is a Thai-language journal directed for such a mind set, let alone a historic one.
