India to buy 300 fighter jets

NEW DELHI - INDIA has agreed to buy up to 300 advanced stealth fighter jets from Russia, Defence Minister A.K. Antony said on Thursday, announcing a deal that could be worth up to US$30 billion (S$39 billion).

Mr Antony told a press conference with his Russian counterpart Anatoly Serdyukov that Russia would supply the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) as well as 45 multi-role transport aircraft. 'India will receive 250-300 most advanced FGFAs,' Mr Antony said. 'These are the two major projects for the next 10 years which will be a shining example of Indian-Russian cooperation.'

Hindustan Aeronautic Ltd (HAL) and Russia's United Aircraft Corp and Rosoboronexport signed a joint venture last month to develop the multi-role transport aircraft in a project worth $645 million. Mr Serdyukov said the success in the co-production of the BrahMos cruise missile would spur the FGFA's joint development by India's HAL and Russia's state-owned Sukhoi Company.

'We have a 10-year programme and it is quite challenging (but) we have very good experience in military cooperation and BrahMos is an example,' the Russian minister said of the FGFA, the richest deal in India's military history. 'The FGFA have been designed by us, the price has been fixed and the draft of the agreement has been given to India. Once it is signed, HAL and Sukhoi will participate,' he said.

Mr Serdyukov did not disclose details. Experts say each 30-ton FGFA is worth up to $100 million. Indian Defence Production Secretary R.K. Singh said the costing would be worked out in stages. 'At present a 300-million dollar preliminary design contract for the FGFA programme is currently under the (Indian) government's consideration,' Mr Singh told AFP separately.

The draft agreement is likely to be signed during a trip to India by President Dmitry Medvedev in December.

If India has enough money to buy 300 jet fighters, why cannot it not provide the basics for a large part of its population that lives in poverty? WTF are charities doing subsidizing this expenditure? Well, that's what happens when the government of India transfers its social obligations to foreign charities.

I suppose with the real likelihood of the Taliban taking control of large parts of Pakistan they have to do something to secure their borders.

Now is probably a good time to grab total control of Kashmir too.

As we have seen with the commonwealth games; indian politicians, like many thai, are only motivated to do anything when there's a back hander available. You cannot buy a Mercedes lifting people out of poverty, but you could buy a fleet with this plane deal, and given india's has border disputes with just about every border, they might get to use them!

Lots more goodies in the pipeline too-

India, which is racing to upgrade its military, is likely to hand out a 12-billion-dollar contract for 126 fighter jets by July 2011, the country's air force chief said on Friday.

Six global aeronautical companies are in a dogfight to grab the deal to sell 126 Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) to the Indian Air Force, which is also shopping for up to 270 Russian-designed Sukhoi war jets .

.... Air chief marshall Naik's announcement came a day after Moscow and New Delhi unveiled plans to co-develop 250-300 advanced stealth fighter jets for military technology-hungry India.

Aviation experts say the 30-ton Russian-designed planes could cost up to 100 million dollars each.

When theres arms like this being sold, the US is around somewhere. They're sending in the Salesman in Chief -

The United States has stepped up pressure on India to buy US military hardware worth up to 11 billion dollars, ahead of President Barack Obama?s first state visit to the country, a report said Friday.
Washington?s hopes of achieving a big commercial "deliverable" from Obama's visit next month are now pinned on a fighter jet deal, the Financial Times said, basing its report on unnamed sources.
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defence Secretary Robert Gates have pressed Indian Defence Minister A.K. Antony to opt for US bids to supply over 100 multi-combat fighter aircraft to India, the paper said.
Antony is on a two-day visit to Washington.
The project, worth up to 11 billion dollars, is the world?s largest pending military hardware deal.
US-based Lockheed Martin and Boeing are among six foreign companies that India is evaluating, and winning the work would create or save thousands of US jobs, the FT said.
"We think we have the finest military hardware in the world, and if India is upgrading its defence capabilities, they should buy American," State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said following Antony's meeting with Clinton.

As economic power grows, so follows military. The US won't have any problem with it, although I doubt they like sharing such a big slice of the cake with the Russians.

Poor, even starving people need protection. All nations need large defense budgets to protect themselves from each other. Any American can confirm this. They recently spent $8 million upgrading a border crossing into Canada while at the same time Canada (S. Alberta) closed their side because nobody was using it. I guess it never registered with anyone to call Canada and ask if they had any plans for the crossing first!! Created a few temp jobs I suppose....whats another $8 million here or there.
(I wonder if the Russians supply operating instructions with these things?)

I'd be surprised if India take the US option considering the US looked to India to solve its paint issue on their top stealth fighters not to long ago.
