Phuket Murder Hunt Begins: Western Man Found Stabbed, Bound in Pond Near Patong Hill

PHUKET: Police have launched a murder investigation after the body of a Western man was discovered in a pond near Patong Hill on Phuket tonight.

The man, aged 40 to 50 and balding, had his wrists bound and was wrapped in garbage bags.






Doctors at Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City found stab wounds to the man's head, chest and ankles.

The body was discovered abour 6pm in a pond near Bang Thong Village, off Soi Bang Thong, which runs off the main Patong Hill Road.

Residents investigated a smell, and found the man's body, wrapped in plastic.

Rescue workers brought up the body.

Police are convinced the man was murdered and are now trying to identify him.

Lieutentant Sakchai Chonyong from Tungthong Police Station is heading the investigating team.

The man was about 180 centimetres tall, thickset, balding. He had three stab wounds to the head, five to his chest and two in an ankle.

He was wearing only black underwear. There were no obvious identification marks or tattoos.

After an estimated week in the water, his facial characteristics are no longer obvious.

The Patong Hill road is officially known as Phrabaramee Road. Soi Bang Thong runs off to the left, as vehicles go up the hill from the Phuket City-Kathu side.

It's the first road past the Tungthong police checkpoint.

PHUKET: The body of a foreign male estimated to be approximately 30 years old has been found stuffed in a black plastic bag in Soi Bang Tong, Kathu.

Police found the body with his hands tied with nylon rope, with severe head trauma and with multiple stab wounds to his back.

Initial investigation leads police to believe that the male has been dead for at least three days. The man is around 180-185 cms tall and weighs around 90 kgs.

The body has been transferred to Patong Hospital where Phuket Police will continue with their investigations and attempt to identify the body.

PHUKET: Concerns are being raised for American Brett Chapman Bean, a 43-year-old who was scheduled to fly from Phuket to Bangkok and then on to Hong Kong, but failed to make the flight on Monday.

Brett's father, Wayne, who lives in California, appealed to Phuketwan overnight for help in finding his son.

''Brett spends about six months every summer on Phuket and has done for the past seven or eight years,'' Mr Bean told us by email from California.

''He was scheduled to leave Phuket on Tuesday, November 26 to fly to Bangkok, from there he was scheduled to fly to Hong Kong and catch a flight to Los Angeles on November 28.

''He never arrived, I checked the airlines and they said his ticket was not used!

''I have contact the US Embassy in Hong Kong and Bangkok. I tried contacting the Phuket police department on several occasions. Because of the language barrier the best I could gather from the discussion was for me to dial 1155.

''Since I called from the US I had no idea what prefix if any I was supposed to use. I tried every combination I could think of without any luck.

''Did you by any chance run and stories about an accident or anything with the name Brett Bean? I am getting desperate and really need your assistance.''

Mr Bean said Brett is slender, weighs about 170 pounds, was 6 feet one inch tall with blond, receding hair and blue eyes.





''He has a year around apartment somewhere near Patong beach,'' Mr Bean said. ''He is a big surfer, hangs around the beach with lots of other surfers.''

Mr Bean was able to provide flight details and said he was certain his son had not caught the flight from Bangkok to Hong Kong or the flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles.

He said he could not be sure whether Brett caught the flight from Phuket to Bangkok, as he did not have the details.

more likely, he would dump the body into the water (visible from the main road)...
