Speed dating records set to break in Pattaya

Chon Buri - Mate seeking singles may find their future Valentines - and rapidly - this Saturday in Pattaya City at the world's largest speed dating event.


Hosted by the "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" museum and the online matchmaking service "Sanook! Thaimate", the event at the Royal Garden Plaza Shopping Mall may make it to the Guinness World Records by breaking the record for speed dating.
It's currently held by the "Dating Cafe GmbH" in Germany's Hamburg City where 252 participants took part in November 2008.

So far, some 500 people have registered for the event, already exceeding the targeted number of 253 participants, according to museum manager Somporn Nakseutrong.

Those interested in joining can register free of charge through the website www.thaimate.com <???????? ????? ????????????? ??????????? ????? ????? ??????? ????????? ??????????????? ??> until Friday, said Sanook Online chief executive Torboon Puangmaha, who also confirmed the participants' personal information and results would be confidential.

Call it speed-dating to the extreme. Just hours before Valentine's Day, hundreds of men and women joined Thailand's first mass speed date in the seaside resort of Pattaya.

Each of the 258 participants had three minutes to engage in a conversation with someone of the opposite sex, the men then swapped seats around a U-shaped table until everybody had around 20 dates.

SOUNDBITE: Speed dating participant, Warisa Chuangthong, saying (Thai):

"Our fathers may see this event as inappropriate for women, because women are taught to be reserved. But times have changed. If women do not actively seek love, it is very difficult to just walk down a street and suddenly fall in love. The only way is to take our chance in the market."

Speed-dating is a new concept in Thailand-- and this event drew its fair share of men-- perhaps hoping for a date on Valentine's Day.

"This might be a chance for me to find someone and develop a romantic relationship."

Hosted by an online matchmaking service in Thailand, the event was a hige success-- breaking the previous speed-dating Guinness World record set in Germany two years ago.
