Three Phuket City cops face transfer after nightclub beating

Three Phuket City cops face transfer after nightclub beating

The scene outside Phuket City Police Station on Saturday night.

PHUKET: Three Phuket City Police officers are set to be transferred after a fight with a group of Territorial Defense Volunteers in a Phuket Town nightclub early on Saturday.

The altercation took place at the ‘Khon 101’ nightclub, a ‘songs-for-life’ establishment located near Nimit Circle.

The three volunteers claimed they were beaten at about 1am by a group of six men, including the three off-duty police officers.

The names and ranks of the three officers were not disclosed.

Seeking justice, the three men and about 100 supporters appeared at Phuket City Police Station at 6pm on Saturday with a truck equipped with a public address system.

The men, all in their early 40s, claimed the policemen set on them because one of them was in possession of a firearm.

Showing their wounds from the beating, the trio argued that the gun was legally-registered, they said.

To deal with the protesters a meeting was held between Phuket City Police Superintendent Wanchai Ekpornpit, Phuket Deputy Governor Chaiwat Tepee, Phuket Provincial Defense Office head Wirote Suwanwong and other officials.

A three-hour meeting ensued during which Phuket Governor Wichai Phraisa-ngop phoned in to advise Deputy Governor Chaiwat to ensure that both sides were treated justly in working out a solution to the dispute.

After the meeting, Deputy Gov Chaiwat told the protesters it had been agreed the three officers in question would be transferred off the island.

Phuket Provincial Police Commander Pekad Thantipong told the crowd that his office would request the immediate transfer from Police Region 8 headquarters in Surat Thani.

Police and defense volunteers must work closely together so some conflicts are inevitable, he said.

“This problem has been solved, so let’s take this opportunity to move forward in cooperating to bring peace and safety to the people of Phuket,” he said.

The transfer command from Region 8 headquarters is expected to be issued today, a reliable source told the Gazette.

The Territorial Defense Volunteer corps was set up by the Border Patrol Police in the 1950s in response to a perceived communist insurgency threat.

“This problem has been solved, so let’s take this opportunity to move forward in cooperating to bring peace and safety to the people of Phuket,”
You gotta love the joke that is Thailand huh.

Off duty cops stomp down volunteers, and the punishment is nothing but transfer.

Even looks like they might meet up with an old friend:

In a far less publicised case, that of 17 year old Pharadon Manit from Phuket, the victim's relatives are still waiting for retribution. The boy's father, Siam, says that members of the metropolitan police had hidden alongside the highway to view a motorcycle gang race. He claims that they were drinking, and opened fire on Pharadon as he and his girlfriend - not members of the biker gang - drove by, shooting him in the hip and cervix. According to Siam, rescue workers arrived at the scene but the police were initially unwilling to let them take Pharadon to the hospital. He died shortly afterwards.

The next day, Siam and roughly 100 irate villagers set up a blockade on a major bypass road, halting traffic for four hours, until the Superintendent of Phuket City Police Station came to negotiate with them. He assured them that the suspect would not be allowed to leave the province and would be suspended from duty while the investigation was underway, but they refused to leave until he agreed to a list of additional demands, including that the officer who shot Worawut be dismissed from the police force and pay compensation to Pharadon's family.

That was in April 2007. Following the incident, the officer responsible for Pharadon's death was transferred to Krabi, not dismissed as promised, and in June the same year, he was promoted from Sergeant to Sergeant Major. No trial date has as yet been assigned to the case, and no compensation has been paid to the victim's family.

Kind of sympathise with the police on this one. Taking a gun to a nightclub isn't very smart.

I have no doubt the Police and the Border Police were probably carrying legal firearms at the time. Wonder what would have happened if a Cop had shot a Cop?
There would certainly be some real problems concerning that. They only got beat up so you could say they were a bit lucky. If he had pulled the gun it might have been a different story.

That's only what they're retardedly conditioned to be. Then when human nature kicks in, well, they lose it big time as they've a life's worth of regressed emotions that need to be let loose.

    It's really quite retarded.

You can not fire one once he has paid his 300k for the job and passed the test (that would be payment of the 300K) then it's home free.

Sad tales. Disgusting really. A police force totally unaccountable for its actions, seemingly able to do as it pleases. What hope for Thailand and its people?

    Another day in paradise.

Jeez. Don't ever come to the Phils, dog. Thai cops are fucking amateurs compared to these bad boys......Private armies here don't have shiny .45's like the Thai wankers, they've got RPG's and .50 caliber machineguns - just for openers.

It's sad when the only way to get any action from the police is to blockade roads and have a mass gathering to force them. Seen it a few times here already.

Hypothetically, let's say Police Officer A commits a crime. He shoots an unarmed person and kills them. People know who the police officer is. From the few cases I've seen in Thailand where something like this has happened, the police officer rarely faces anything more than a transfer or perhaps a short stay in jail. Is this because he is ready and willing to hand over whatever money/gold/etc. might be needed to smooth things over? Or do the police actually care enough about one of their own (I suppose it makes sense as he is an employee, an earner, as it were) to go ahead and impede justice and keep him out of jail?

Would it make any difference if the cop were poor or people at the station thought he was a shithead?

I know 2 police officers that were jailed a month each just for fighting with each other, although one did start whacking the other with his gun, one got stuck in Sattahip jail the other Pattaya.
