American Assaulted Italian in Patong, Say Police

AN AMERICAN savagely assaulted an Italian in Soi Bangla on Monday night after a disagreement, police say.

The two had been drinking in the same bar on Soi Bangla and both took a liking to one of the waitresses.

The American, a younger man, was solidly built and possibly favored his chances of winning the young lady's attention.

The Italian was an older man, aged 54.

However, according to police who interviewed witnesses in the bar, the American was ''impolite'' and used bad language.

The waitress decided to ignore him and chatted instead with the Italian, police were told.

The American left the bar.

A little later, about 9.20pm, the Italian left the bar. As he walked out, the American was waiting, barechested and apparently ready to fight.

Police Lieutenant Surasak Jaidee said the American beat up the Italian, using a knuckleduster on one fist.

By the time officers arrived at the scene, the American was still beating the Italian, he added.

An ambulance arrived and paramedics treated the Italian, then took him to Bangkok Hospital Phuket, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

He was still in hospital today after having more than 20 stitches to wounds on his face.

Police Lieutenant Surasak named the men as Corey Dalee Daniel and Enrico Zarantonello.

The American has been charged with assault with a weapon.

He is being held and police will interview Mr Zarantonello when he is able before deciding whether to pursue charges.

I must say that this is the first time I have ever heard of a fight over a girl in Thailand, well amongst farangs anyway.

Without taking sides with regard to nationality bashing, as I agree with Sabang you find scum from every nationality, the Italian may have wound up the American verbally and deserved a slap but a prolonged assault is certainly out of order.

I hope the American gets what he deserves and is deported after he has served his jail term and paid compensation to the Italian.

Drunk dumb Brits used to do the same thing when spicy in Chiang Mai was an open-air goldfish bowl. They 'developed' relationships with hoes who hadn't found a punter for the night and got jealous if another guy/punter looked at his teeelak.

There are more British visitors to Thailand every year than Americans, and I suspect significantly more when it comes to young male tourists. Americans tend to go to Mexico/Carib/CA/SA for booze, girls, and sun holidays (not sure I got the order right).

Come to think of it, what was the Italian or his inamorata thinking? The Yank was waiting outside with his shirt off to fight an older, possibly drunker man? Just pick three random Thai guys and tell them they can split 1000 baht if they go give the shirtless wanker a stomping. It'll turn into 100 baht a piece because three guys will turn to ten in short order. He might have to pay them to stop kicking the idiot.
