Thailand : Flu less worrisome than political/economic factors

Flu less worrisome than political/economic factors: Chumphol

Tourism and Sports Minister Chumphol Silapa-archa insisted that the influenza A (H1N1) pandemic impact to Thailand's tourism industry is milder than the impacts from political conflicts.

He insisted that foreign visitor arrivals are increasing despite the flu, but the industry has not yet fully recovered due to concerns on politics following the Bangkok airports shutdown and violence in Pattaya as well as the global economic crisis. What all must be aware is there should be no more political upheaval.

"Political turbulence and global crisis are sending greater impacts to tourism than the flu, as some travellers are making trips no matter what," he said.

In August, he will be in Shanghai to convince China's tourism minister and Shanghai governor to allow more Chinese tourists to Thailand.

China earlier sanctioned travelling into Thailand, where flu death tolls reached 24 on Tuesday. Chumphol said that in the national level, China has lifted the sanction but local governments still maintain the precautionary measure.

Bangkok on Tuesday said over 400 schools in the capital city during July 15-19.

The Cabinet on Tuesday is considering to adopt a similar measure to all schools nationwide, to slow down the spread of the flu.

If a Thai Government Minister insists on anything being true you can be certain that it is not.
