Sex-change boxer back in the ring

The world of muay Thai is agog. Transsexual boxer Parinya Kiartbussaba, better known as Nong Tum, is making a comeback.

After a two-year absence from boxing, the newly named Nong Tum Fairtex Gym will step back into the ring in a 140-pound contest against Japanese Kenshiro Lookchaomaekhemthong on Sunday at Fairtex Pattaya’s grand opening.


In a show of bravado yesterday Parinya swore to knock out her opponent within three rounds. But the surgery that made her a woman last year has taken its toll.

“I dare say I’m unsure if I can beat him,” she confided. “The physical changes have taken their toll on me. The Fairtex Sport Club and promoter Banjong Bussarakhamwong just asked me to fight this one match,” the 25-year-old told The Nation yesterday.

“It’s a matter of dignity. We both need the victory because I was a muay Thai champion and the Japanese boxer cannot lose to a woman.

“Although it is not a real competition, I will do my best,” Parinya said. “I will show that even now that I am a woman, I’m still able to punch and kick.”

Parinya, whose story was made into a movie called “Beautiful Boxer” a few years ago, shrugged off concerns about the rough and tumble of the ring damaging her new feminine figure, especially her upper torso.
“I will have a protector and will wear a shirt over it. There’s nothing to worry about,” she revealed.
In June, she plans another exhibition bout, this time in the US with a female opponent, Lucia Rijker, who appeared in the Hollywood film “Million Dollar Baby”.
