Four men arrested in possession of four AK-47 automatic rifles in Phang-nga

Police in Phang-nga province have arrested four men, after they found four AK-47 automatic assault rifles and dozens of rounds of ammunition in the sports utility vehicle in which they were travelling from the Deep South.

The four suspects were found to have residences in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat provinces, known to be hotbeds of southern insurgency.

Police, manning a checkpoint in Tham Nam Phud sub-district in Phang-nga, stopped the vehicle for a search at about 4am on Saturday and discovered the four illegal weapons with one magazine and 63 rounds of ammunition.

The suspects claimed that they were heading to Phuket. Police are holding them for further questioning.

It seems a bit odd that 4 men were moving the weapons. Perhaps they had an imminent outing in mind.

One hopes they searched their residences *before* announcing the bust to the press.

It’s all for show. To be fair, if four of those bozos turned up waving AK-47s at me, I sure as shit ain’t going to argue about how many bullets they have in the chamber.

With only one clip and 63 bullets I doubt it. They were probably selling them.

That could be poor reporting. It doesn't say that the four weapons held no magazines.

I don't for a moment believe that this was a random stop and search. Almost certainly intelligence driven.

The authorities have worried for years, quite rightly, about an attack on Phuket. They aren't likely to say too much about this particular case.

There's also a lot of Russians in Phuket.

There'd be a market there for them wanting their own AK-47 for sentimental attachment reasons.

Suspect Arrested with Weapons Heading to Phuket is Linked to Southern Insurgency, Say Police

Authorities have found one of four suspects arrested in Phang Nga heading to Phuket involved in smuggling weapons has ties to insurgent groups in Thailand’s southern border region.

The Phang Nga Provincial Police told the Phuket Express that one of the suspects has a history of involvement with insurgent groups in the southern border area. The intended target locations are believed to be in the Phuket. The individual confessed to receiving the weapons from Hat Yai, Songkhla, where they were paid 70,000 Thai Baht for their efforts.

This week at the Wang Mo Kang Checkpoint, police continue to enforce strict inspections of all vehicles. This checkpoint was established to intercept illegal activities, including the smuggling of drugs, weapons, and undocumented migrant workers, as well as individuals with outstanding warrants. The checkpoint operates daily, with schedules adjusted based on situational needs.

Following the arrest police have instructed officers to intensify inspections and exercise heightened caution. They also commended the officers for their dedication to law enforcement and pointed out the importance of preventing offenders from evading justice.
