Thread: Govt Warns of Digital Wallet Online Scams

The government has issued a warning about online fraud targeting the 10,000-Baht Economic Stimulus Program, urging the public to avoid clicking on fraudulent links. Fraudsters have been impersonating official government platforms to spread misleading information and develop fake applications to steal personal data.


Between January 1 and March 12, the Anti-Fake News Center Thailand detected 59 instances of misinformation related to the Digital Wallet Program, along with 13 cases of completely fabricated reports. Investigators also found five fake digital wallet applications claiming to be linked to the government’s “Thang Rath” system, all of which have since been taken down. The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES) and the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) have been working to track and remove deceptive content.


To protect against online scams, authorities have urged the public to follow four key precautions: avoid clicking on unverified links, refrain from believing unconfirmed information, verify all transactions before taking action, and never share personal data unless certain of the recipient’s authenticity.


Since the launch of the digital wallet program on August 1, 2024, authorities have shut down 341 impersonation accounts, including 308 on Facebook and 33 on TikTok. The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society has removed 219 accounts, while the National Cyber Security Agency took down 122.


Agencies will continue monitoring online threats, investigating suspicious activities, and dismantling fraudulent platforms, while urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious links or accounts to the relevant authorities.
