A Pattaya motorbike taxi driver and passenger fought in front of a police station early Wednesday morning, ending in a stabbing.
The altercation broke out around 2:30 AM on November 20th directly in front of the Pattaya Police Station.
Mr. Saw Hla Htav Han, a 31-year-old Myanmar national, reported that he had hired a motorcycle taxi to take him and a woman from a nightlife venue in South Pattaya to their accommodation. While passing in front of the Pattaya Police Station, he asked the driver to turn into Soi 9. However, the driver, identified only as 36-year-old Mr. Chaisan, allegedly responded rudely and verbally insulted him.
Mr. Saw and the woman then requested to be dropped off in front of the police station, which reportedly angered Mr. Chaisan. The situation quickly escalated into a heated argument, followed by a fist fight directly in front of the police station. The incident occurred in full view of numerous Thai and foreign tourists walking by.
During the fight, Mr. Saw claimed that Mr. Chaisan pulled out a small knife from his bag as he was losing the altercation and stabbed him once under the chest, causing a minor injury. Mr. Saw then retreated toward the nearby police apartments, with Mr. Chaisan following him. Tourists nearby alerted the police officers inside the station to stop the fight.
The officers separated the two and escorted them to the investigation room to determine the cause of the conflict. Both were later charged with physical assault and were each fined 1,000 baht but both parties declined to push further legal charges.
