Thailand to postpone Oct 1 minimum wage hike, official says

BANGKOK: Thailand will postpone a hike in the minimum wage to 400 baht (US$12.15) per day scheduled for Oct 1 by about two weeks due to a lack of a quorum at meetings of the committee working on the increase, a senior labour official said on Monday (Sep 23).

The committee, which includes representatives from employers, labour and the government, had failed to reach a quorum at two previous meetings to discuss the planned hike, Labour Ministry permanent secretary Pairoj Chotikasathien said.

"We will move forward as quickly as possible," he said, adding the new minimum wage would only apply to businesses that employed more than 200 people.

The increase in the minimum wage from the current range of 330 baht to 370 baht per day was part of the ruling Pheu Thai party's campaign platform, and it has pledged to increase it further to 600 baht by 2027.

The planned hike is part of the government's drive to spark growth in Southeast Asia's second-largest economy, which has been held back by soaring household debt and a slowing manufacturing sector.

The government's flagship policy is a 450 billion baht stimulus scheme, where people will be given 10,000 baht each to spend in local communities. The first phase is set to begin before the end of the month. The central bank expects the economy to grow 2.6 per cent this year, up from 1.9 per cent in 2023.

Why does a national government department working to the national government cabinet need a fucking quorum to decide a national policy on something so important as a national minimum wage as if it was a fucking council meeting in some shitkicker parish hall.
Christ on a fucking bike, they’re the fucking government, all consultations with partner agencies etc are submitted first before final decision by it.

Fucking Thai, fuck up everything and anything.

Because they have no intention of increasing minimum wage and need something to delay and/or blame. Reason, a minumum wage hike is not in the interest of the monied 10% who put and keep the government in power.

Actually, I was being somewhat rhetorical. The excuse is of course a pretext. They’re probably still waiting to get the heads up from Thaksin.

The minimum wage is of course a misnomer, it is in practice the maximum wage set by the panjandrums of this medieval country representing the twenty or so economic barons who pretty much own society and exploit the peasantry as fodder for their profits.
The factory worker, the retail assistant, the department store flunkey, the hotel worker, the cleaner, the bar and restaurant staff, security workers, construction workers, they’re all getting more or less the same give or take OT, and tips - except of course the migrant workers and farm serfs who get less.

Unless they win the lottery or steal, workers are locked in, indentured for life by their debts from loans with which they need to function because their incomes will never be sufficient to cover their needs at any aspirational level.

No wonder the poor fuckers pay the gang master agents a fortune to work abroad.
