A 71-year-old woman was found dead in a department store fitness centre’s sauna in Nonthaburi province yesterday.
The victim, Thanchanok Petchkaew, a regular customer, arrived at about 8am yesterday.
A staff member told police that Thanchanok usually exercised by herself.
“At 11am, she was not seen there and the staff assumed that she had already left. At 6pm, however, somebody informed the staff that her body had been found in the sauna. Attempts to resuscitate her failed,” police said.
The victim’s body, the skin of which was severely damaged, was sent for autopsy at the Central Institute for Forensic Science.
Today, the victim’s husband and daughter-in-law submitted documents to claim her body from the institute.
Her daughter-in-law, whose name was given, told reporters that she is suspicious about the circumstances of her mother-in-law’s death, adding “I also wonder whether the staff of the fitness centre was negligent, as my mother-in-law was left in the sauna for many hours before her body was found. She was not suffering any illness,” she said.
She also doubted whether the sauna was functioning properly.
Thanchanok loved to exercise at this fitness centre, where she would meet friends, according to her daughter-in-law.
