Two rival gangs of Cambodian and Thai men clashed on the night of May 30th, resulting in one young Cambodian national getting shot in the leg.
At 10:30 PM, Nongprue police were notified by Banglamung Hospital that a person had been shot and injured. They immediately responded to the scene together with The Pattaya News reporters.
Upon arrival at the hospital’s emergency room, authorities found the injured man, identified as Mr. Rawut Veng, 20, a Cambodian national. He had been shot in the right leg with an unidentified firearm. The bullet had passed through his leg.
Mr. Sid, 22, a Cambodian friend of the victim, was waiting to give a statement to the police. He led the officers to the crime scene, which was located at the Nongprue Overpass in the Nongprue sub-district, Banglamung district, Chonburi province.
Mr. Sid recounted the incident to the officers, explaining that he had been driving a motorcycle and took the injured man to the hospital. He said that prior to the incident, they had an altercation with a group of Thai teenagers who had previously stared at them and provoked them. On the day of the incident, they had gathered a group of 4-5 Cambodian friends and rode their motorcycles together to meet the Thai teenagers near Wat Nongprue.
When they arrived, the Thai teenagers chased them with knives, causing them to scatter and flee in different directions. However, Mr. Sid and the injured man were pursued by the Thai teenagers on a white Honda PCX motorcycle. The assailants cornered them and shot Mr. Veng once in the leg before fleeing the scene. Mr. Sid then rushed his injured friend to the hospital.
Nongprue police interviewed the injured man and all his friends. They are reviewing CCTV footage in the area to identify and apprehend the suspects.
