A horrific accident, involving an 18-wheeler with a drowsy driver, unfolded on a highway near Pattaya yesterday morning, leaving two people dead and several others injured.


The incident occurred around 8:40 AM on Tuesday, May 28th, at Highway 7 inbound to Pattaya in the Nong Pla Lai sub-district, Banglamung district, Chonburi province. Sawang Boriboon rescue workers rushed to the scene upon receiving the report.


There, rescuers found an 18-wheeler truck, which was carrying cement sheets, and had rammed into a roadside shop. It was understood that the truck driver had lost control of his vehicle and swerved off the road before colliding with one pickup truck, two motorbikes, two power poles, and the shop. The impact caused extensive damage to the vehicles and the shop, scattering debris across the scene.


Rescue workers provided medical assistance to five injured individuals and extracted the driver of the 18-wheeler truck, who was trapped in the wreckage. The injured were transported to Banglamung Hospital for further treatment. One woman suffered grievous injuries as both of her legs were reportedly crushed by the truck.


Additionally, it was reported that two women were sadly killed in the accident. The deceased were identified as 25-year-old Ms. Sirinthorn Muangton and a 17-year-old girl, whose name was withheld due to her age. Both were employees at the shop and they were on a motorcycle together at the front of the shop when the truck crashed into them and horrifically crushed their bodies.


According to initial reports, Mr. Rung Saengkhamchu, the 50-year-old driver of the 18-wheeler, reportedly admitted to police that he had fallen asleep at the wheel due to a lack of sleep. The man suffered only minor injuries. He apologized for the tragedy he had caused.


Relevant police are investigating the exact cause of the accident and are expected to charge Mr. Rung for his reckless action.
