The man who possessed a tiger cub without a permit will not only face legal action, but may also have to compensate the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department by 1.3 million baht for the expense of taking care of the animal.

The four-month-old cub has already been seized from the man in Chachoengsao province, who was only identified as “Yothin”, and is being cared for by the Wildlife Conservation Office in Suphan Buri province.

Anant Sripupong, chief of the Suphan Buri office, said that his office is obligated to take care of the cub until she is about ten years old and the expenses incurred will, by law, have to be paid by the suspect, he said.

The female tiger cub has been named “Neena” by the Natural Resources and Environment Minister, Patcharawat Wongsuwan.

Her presence was the talk of the town last week when she escaped from her confinement and was sighted by local people in Chachoengsao and rescued.

Yothin initially claimed that she was a liger, the hybrid offspring of a lion and a tiger, to avoid legal consequences, as the liger is not a protected species, unlike the tiger.
