Body found in barrel recovered from reservoir in Chon Buri

The body of a man was found stuffed into a 200-litre plastic drum and covered with cement on Saturday. It was retrieved from Map Prachan Reservoir in Bang Lamung district of Chon Buri.

The remains have been sent to the Police General Hospital for identification and autopsy.

Yesterday, divers from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation were asked by Pol Maj-Gen Thiradet Thumsutee, a commander attached to Metropolitan Police Bureau, to look for a 200-litre plastic drum in the reservoir.

It took the divers about two hours to find the drum in three metres of water, only about two metres from the shore. When the drum was pried open, the body of a man, about 170-cm tall, was found inside, covered by cement.

The identity of the victim is not yet known, but police suspect that he could be a South Korean, 35-year-old Roh Eui Jong, whom the South Korean Embassy in Bangkok reported missing at Khlong Tan police station on May 7th.

Pol Maj-Gen Thiradet said the mother of the suspected victim received a call, made from her son’s phone by an anonymous man, telling her that her son had dumped their stash of illegal narcotics in water and demanding that she send them 3 million baht in ransom money by 8am on May 8th.

The police investigation indicates that Roh Eui Jong was abducted from his apartment in the Khlong Tan area on May 3rd.

Meanwhile, Pol Maj-Gen Noppasilp Poonsawat, deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said yesterday that they have managed to identify two suspects, one of whom left Thailand on May 9th.

He added that police have been investigating the abduction to ascertain whether more people are involved.

Police Find Body of Missing Korean Man in Plastic Barrel in Pattaya Reservoir

Thai police found the body of a missing South Korean man in a plastic barrel filled with cement in a reservoir in Pattaya, following an investigation into a kidnapping and ransom case.

The victim, identified by Thai police as Mr. Eui Jong Roh, 34, had been missing since May 7th after his mother received a ransom demand of 3 million baht from his kidnappers. The kidnappers threatened to kill, dismember, and sell Mr. Roh’s organs on the black market if the ransom was not paid by May 8th.

Thai police began an investigation and interrogated the victim’s Thai wife (name withheld for her safety) and learned that the wife met Mr. Roh for the last time on May 2nd at a pub in the RCA area in Bangkok. After reviewing CCTV footage on May 3rd, police found two Korean men accosting and forcefully taking Mr. Roh into a car around 2 AM. It was found that the car in question was a rental car. They then headed towards Pattaya before changing to a new rental vehicle, a pickup truck, and rented accommodation near the Mapprachan Reservoir.

On May 4th around 9 PM, CCTV footage captured the pickup truck leaving the accommodation with a black sheet covering its bed. Thai police found that the suspects had previously bought a plastic barrel from a local store. The truck then arrived at the Mapprachan Reservoir where the body of Mr. Roh stuffed in the barrel was abandoned in the water.

The body of the victim was discovered on May 11th by Pattaya police. Authorities then interrogated a local store owner, 31-year-old Ms. Nitaya Janprung, who revealed that on May 3rd, a foreigner arrived at her shop in a four-door white pickup truck to buy a large plastic barrel, two rolls of nylon ropes, and scissors.

The man did not show any signs of suspicion. CCTV cameras were able to clearly record him.

An autopsy is being conducted to determine the exact cause of Mr. Roh’s death. Police are investigating and have not yet made any arrests.

Suspect wanted in container case held in South Korea

South Korean police have taken into custody a man who is suspected of involvement in the murder of a South Korean man, whose body was found stuffed in a plastic barrel and dumped into Map Prachan Reservoir in Chon Buri province.

According to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency, the suspect, in his 20s, was apprehended at his residence Sunday evening.

In Bangkok, Pol Maj-Gen Noppasilp Poonsawat, deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said they have received, from South Korean police, DNA samples from the suspected victim’s father.

DNA samples from the suspected victim’s elder sister and another relative have also been obtained and, along with the DNA of the suspected victim’s father, will be compared to the DNA obtained from the deceased, to confirm the identity of the victim, currently believed to be 35-year-old Roh Eui Jong.

Noppasilp said he has been informed about the arrest of a suspect in South Korea, adding that a second suspect has already escaped to Cambodia. He said an immigration report shows that a third suspect has not left Thailand through normal channels, adding that they are still trying to locate him.

He said that he has asked the South Korean police to check in what kind of business, if any, the three suspects are involved.

Pol Maj-Gen Supeechai Limsivavong, commander of the Institute of Forensic Medicine at the Police General Hospital, said today that it will probably take about three days for the DNA identification process to be completed.

According to Yonhap news agency, the suspect was apprehended at his residence on Sunday evening and placed under emergency arrest, Yonhap cited the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency.

Police had been tracing the whereabouts of the suspect, who is one of three South Koreans suspected of kidnapping and murdering a South Korean national in Pattaya.

Third suspect in South Korean’s murder apprehended in Phnom Penh

Cambodian police have arrested a third suspect in the murder in Thailand of a South Korean man, whose body was found in a plastic barrel dumped into the Map Prachan Reservoir in Bang Lamung district of Chon Buri.

Pol Maj-Gen Noppasilp Poonsawat, deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said today that he learned that Cambodian police apprehended the suspect at lodgings in Phnom Penh on Monday, and are now making preparations to have him extradited to face charges in South Korea.

As far as the Thai police investigation is concerned, he said that identification of the remains in the barrel by the victim’s elder sister, as well as DNA comparisons, have confirmed that the deceased was Roh Eui Jong, who was reported missing earlier this month.

He said that investigators are waiting for official reports from the Institute of Forensic Medicine, at the Police General Hospital, before they can wrap up the case and seek warrants for the arrests of the three suspects on charges of pre-mediated murder, illegal detention and concealment of a dead body to conceal a crime.

One of the three suspects is in Thai police custody, while the two others are in Cambodia and South Korea
