Efforts underway to track and capture tiger seen near village in Kamphaeng Phet

A wild tiger venturing into a village in Kamphaeng Phet province has prompted the Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) to dispatch a team of officials and veterinarians to the area.

DNP Director-General Atthapol Charoenchansa announced on Saturday (Feb 17) that efforts are underway to track and safely capture the tiger seen near Kariang Namtok village in Khlong Lan district. The team, which inspected the site on Friday, found evidence of the tiger’s presence through footprints leading back into the forest.

The origins of the tiger remain uncertain, as it roams an area connected to the vast Thung Yai and Huay Kha Khaeng forests. The plan is to capture, examine, and, if necessary, treat the tiger for injuries before releasing it back into its natural habitat.

Khlong Lan National Park Chief Surachai Photkhamanee provided details on the tiger’s size, estimating it to be about 1.5 meters in length and 70-80 centimeters in height, with an age of approximately two years. It’s speculated that the tiger may have strayed from Khun Nam Yen in Mae Wong National Park.

Fifty rangers have been mobilized to locate and capture the tiger following reports of the animal killing a pig and causing concern among the local community.

Stray tiger trapped in Kamphaeng Phet

A wild tiger, which raised safety concerns when it was recently seen straying into a rural community in Khlong Lan district of Kamphaeng Phet province, was caught in a trap last night, according to the Facebook page of the Thailand Tiger Project DNP.

The post said that the tiger is now in the care of officials from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation.

A veterinarian checked the health of the 2-3-year-old female cat, estimated to weigh between 80 and 90kg, and found that it is blind in its left eye and emaciated with minor wounds on a left paw. It was given deworming medication, antibiotics and vitamins before being sent to the wildlife breeding station in Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary.

The vet said that the tiger will be kept at the breeding centre for a few months for rehabilitation, before it is released back into the wild in Huai Kha Khaeng.

Surachai Pokhamanee, chief of Khlong Lan National Park, said that about 50 park officials, divided into small groups, had been maintaining vigil over a 4.8 hectare area in a village in Khlong Lan Pattana sub-district, where the tiger was suspected to be roaming.

Meanwhile, another team of officials had set up traps, containing prey to attract the tiger, which was caught by a camera trap at about 9.50pm. At about 10.20pm, the tiger ate the prey and was captured.

Recovering at Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Breeding Station, Uthai Thani Province in preparation for release, and to be fitted with a satellite radio collar to assess the size of the foraging area it covers to assist with future tiger conservation.
