Dengue fever cases in Thailand on the rise

Dengue fever is on the rise, with a total of 13,126 cases, including 12 fatalities, being reported so far this year. This is a 2.2 fold increase over the same period last year, according to Dr. Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, director-general of the Disease Control Department.

Of this year’s cases, 3,776 were children aged from 5 to 14, followed by 3,072 in the 15 to 24 age group and 2,350 cases in the 25 to 34 age group. Most of the fatalities were people over 65 years old.

Dr. Thongchai said that the best preventive measure now is for everyone, including those who have already been bitten, to apply mosquito repellents, to protect them from being bitten by striped mosquitoes, which will bite the other people and spread the disease.

He also warned patients not to take anti-pyretic medicines, such as aspirin, without consulting a doctor first, because the medicine can increase internal bleeding.

He said the El Niño weather phenomenon will contribute to an increase in dengue fever cases, as he emphasised the importance of the elimination of mosquito breeding grounds.

Actually, the best preventative measure is to remove standing water around homes to eliminate the breeding grounds. Next step is to avoid being outside in the evening when the bites are most common.

The CHIANG Mai Health Department was rather impressive a decade ago in educating folks in a house-to-house campaign but that seems to have all fallen to the way side these days.

Well the WHO - and I reckon they might have done some research - say:

    Prevention and control

The mosquitoes that spread dengue are active during the day.
So there's no hiding from the little bastards unfortunately.

They used to spray diesel vapour all over the place a few years back but seemed to have now stopped for some reason.

There are 2 types of fogging, namely water-based thermal fogging and diesel-based thermal fogging. Both are equally effective in eliminating the harbouring and breeding of adult mosquitoes surrounding your premises compound.

That is definitely the best approach. It at least helps. Unfortunately with the bite happening during the day, it really is a crap shoot in many regards but living near or having standing water increases the chances.

When I lived in Malaysia we used to get inspectors comr around to check gardens for standing water. If they found any, old buckets, tyres, etc, you'd get a fine. They also used to fog regularly.

I haven't noticed either happen in Thailand.

Singapore, despite its rigorous enforcement of anti-dengue measures, still experiences on average around 1500 cases annually among a population of 5.9 millions.

Although some carriers are active pretty much throughout the day the real little fuckers tend to be much more a problem at dusk and dawn when they float about near their moobaans looking for food.

Slap the deet on if you’re going to sit on the balcony/ patio for sundowners and spray bedrooms every evening.

Mosquitos can live happily in watered flower/ plant pots and the like so this removal of lying water malarkey is not that effective.
