Strong quake prompts tsunami warning Japan

A powerful earthquake measuring a 7 on the Japanese scale — the strongest on the scale — rocked central Japan on Monday, prompting a major tsunami warning for a broad swath of the country's western coast.

The tsunami warning urged people to quickly leave coastal areas of Ishikawa, Niigata, Toyama and Yamagata prefectures, with waves of up to 5 meters predicted for the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa, NHK reported.

The quake, which struck on New Year's Day, was felt in Tokyo and across the Kanto area.

Kidding aside, that magnitude 7.5 earthquake looked scary. Hope everyone is safe & no casualties. (If that happened in PH, it would've been utter chaos.)

At least 13 people have been confirmed dead in the powerful earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula and surrounding areas in central Japan on New Year's Day as more reports of damage came in and rescuers raced to find survivors on Tuesday.

The magnitude-7.6 quake caused extensive structural damage and fires in the city of Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture, and blazes were still raging in some areas as continuing aftershocks and rubble on roads hampered rescue operations.

The deaths included seven victims at Wajima Municipal Hospital, city officials said.

Tsunami warnings covering extensive areas along the Sea of Japan were lifted Tuesday morning, after the highest wave of around 1.2 meters reached Wajima Port on Monday night following the 4:10 p.m. quake.

Footage taken by the public broadcaster NHK on Tuesday morning showed a seven-story building toppled over sideways and fires still blazing in a central area of Wajima known for its morning market.

Fires have engulfed over 200 structures, but chances of them spreading further are slim, Ishikawa prefectural officials said.

"It is extremely difficult for vehicles to enter northern areas of the Noto Peninsula," Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said at a press conference, adding the central government has been coordinating shipment of relief supplies using ships.

About 1,000 Self-Defense Force personnel are engaged in rescue and relief operations, Kishida said.

Japan’s prime minister Fumio Kishida said rescuers were in a “battle against time” as the death toll from the series of strong earthquakes rose to 24.

A magnitude of 7.6 jolted Japan on Monday afternoon damaging buildings and roads, which also prompted the country to issue tsunami warnings along the coast. The tsunami warnings were later lifted on early Tuesday morning.

Emergency services rushed to rescue people trapped under rubble in Ishikawa prefecture on the main central island of Honshu on New Year’s Day after buildings collapsed.

Thousands of army personnel, firefighters and police officers from have been dispatched to the worst-hit area in the relatively remote Noto peninsula.

“The search and rescue of those impacted by the quake is a battle against time,” prime minister Fumio Kishida said during an emergency disaster meeting.

He added that rescuers were finding it very difficult to reach the northern tip of the peninsula due to wrecked roads, and that helicopter surveys had discovered many fires and widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure.

The Meteorological Agency said in a news conference that more major quakes could hit the area over the next week, especially in the next two or three days.

Death toll rises to 30 in Japanese quakes: local gov't

The death toll has risen to 30 after a series of powerful earthquakes hit the area in central Japan and the vicinity, national news agency Kyodo citing local authorities.

A series of building collapses and fires left at least 30 people dead in the most-hit Ishikawa prefecture.

As more damage reports and information about people trapped continued to come in regarding other municipalities, injuries were reported in Niigata, Toyama, Fukui and Gifu prefectures due to collapsed or damaged buildings.

Rescue efforts continue in Japan after 55 people were killed in a powerful earthquake that hit the country on New Year's Day.

Homes collapsed, buildings caught fire and roads were extensively damaged, hindering the work of rescue services.

The epicentre of the 7.6 quake was the Noto peninsula, in central Japan.

The Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, said emergency services were locked in a "race against time" to rescue survivors.

On Tuesday, Mr Kishida also said some 3,000 rescuers were trying to reach parts of the Noto peninsula. Helicopter surveys showed many fires and widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure. The city of Wajima, on the northern tip of Noto, has been cut off from land routes.

The Japanese military has been handing out supplies including food, water and blankets for those who have had to vacate their homes. The country's government has said that 57,360 people had to be evacuated.

Tens of thousands of meals are being delivered across the affected region.

Aftershocks continued throughout Monday and Tuesday. Japan's chief cabinet secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi warned people to "be alert" for more earthquakes "of an intensity of up to 7" in the coming week.

Ishikawa, 155km (96.3 miles) south of the Noto peninsula, experienced a 4.9 quake on Tuesday afternoon.

    • Japan Quake: Survivors Face Freezing Rain, Threat of Landslides

The death toll from a massive earthquake that struck Japan on New Years Day rose to 62 on Wednesday as authorities rushed to bring aid to survivors facing freezing temperatures and heavy rain forecast for later in the day.

The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 struck the Noto peninsula on Monday afternoon, levelling houses and cutting off remote areas from much-needed aid.

Heavy rains were forecast in the quake-hit areas on Wednesday raising fears of landslides, authorities said, in what could further hinder efforts to free many more trapped under rubble.

Severed roads, damaged infrastructure, and the remote location of the hardest-hit areas have complicated rescue efforts, and the full extent of damage and casualties remains unclear two days after the quake.

In Suzu, a town of just over 5,000 households near the quake's epicentre, authorities have been unable to respond to 72 calls for help, according to its mayor Masuhiro Izumiya.

Authorities confirmed 62 deaths so far, up from 55 late on Tuesday, making the earthquake the deadliest in Japan since at least 2016.

"It's been over 40 hours since the initial quake. This is a battle against time, and I believe now is a crucial moment in that battle," Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said at a news conference held after a disaster response meeting on Wednesday.

The government opened a sea route to deliver aid and some larger trucks are now able to reach some of the hardest-hit areas, Kishida said.

Mitsuru Kida, 74, a survivor of the earthquake who lives in hard-hit Wajima city, feared a return to life as usual will be time-consuming process.

"The road conditions are terrible. This is the first time the roads have been damaged this badly," he said at a community building which had been turned into a make-shift evacuation centre.

"I have an impression that most people have yet to regain energy to stand up again at the moment," he added.

Smaller quakes continue to hit the peninsula. Firefighters searching for survivors in the rubble of a partially collapsed building were seen rushing out to safety as an earthquake warning alarm sounded before noon on Wednesday, according to footage broadcast by public broadcaster NHK.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed solidarity with Japan on Tuesday after it was hit by a magnitude 7.6 earthquake and assured the public that the government is ensuring the safety of Filipinos there.

“We are deeply saddened to hear of the magnitude 7.6 earthquake in Japan on New Year’s Day. We are in close collaboration with the Japanese government to secure the welfare of our kababayans, who thankfully remain unharmed,” President Marcos said in a statement.

“We have made the offer to assist in any way that we can. In the face of shared climate challenges within the Pacific Ring of Fire, we stand united with Japan and stay ready to provide support from the Philippines,” he said.

According to the Philippine Embassy in Japan, no Filipino has been killed or hurt during the earthquake.

Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) OIC Undersecretary Hans Leo Cacdac said his department is monitoring the situation of the Filipino workers in Japan, particularly in Ishikawa and Toyama Prefectures.

He said there are a total of 1,194 Filipinos living in the two prefectures, 469 in Ishikawa and 725 in Toyama. He added around 90 percent of the Filipino workers there in the manufacturing, welding and carpentry sectors. A smaller percentage of around 10 percent are caregivers.

“We are monitoring the employment situation of OFWs, especially in the Ishikawa and Toyama Prefectures. We will provide financial assistance to OFWs whose employment have been suspended or ceased due to the quake,” Cacdac said.

    • Japan quake toll rises as many trapped under possibly thousands of homes

The death toll from a massive earthquake that struck Japan on New Year’s Day has risen as authorities rushed to bring aid to survivors facing freezing temperatures and expected heavy rain.

In Suzu, a town of a little more than 5000 households near the quake’s epicentre, 90 per cent of houses may have been destroyed, according to its mayor Masuhiro Izumiya.

“The situation is catastrophic,” he said. The quake with a preliminary magnitude 7.6 struck on Monday, levelling houses and cutting off remote areas from much-needed aid.

Heavy rains were forecast in the quake-hit areas raising fears of landslides, authorities said, in what could further hinder efforts to free many more trapped under rubble.

The number of reported fatalities reached 64, although the full extent of the damage remains unclear, according to a report from Kyodo news agency, up from 55 late on Tuesday, making the earthquake the deadliest in the country since at least 2016.

“It’s been over 40 hours since the initial quake. This is a battle against time, and I believe now is a crucial moment in that battle,” Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said at a news conference held after a disaster response meeting on Wednesday.

“Now is a critical moment,” he said. “We are doing everything to save lives.”

The government opened a sea route to deliver aid and some larger trucks could reach some of the hardest-hit areas and the accident at Tokyo’s Haneda airport on Tuesday involving a coast guard plane working on relief efforts wasn’t having a logistical impact on rescue operations, Kishida said.

Mitsuru Kida, 74, a survivor of the earthquake who lives in hard-hit Wajima city, feared a return to life as usual given the damaged insfrastructure.

“The road conditions are terrible. This is the first time the roads have been damaged this badly,” he said at a makeshift evacuation centre.

“I have an impression that most people have yet to regain energy to stand up again at the moment.”

Smaller quakes continue to hit the peninsula. Firefighters searching for survivors in the rubble of a partially collapsed building were seen rushing out to safety as an earthquake warning alarm sounded before noon on Wednesday, according to footage broadcast by public broadcaster NHK.

About 200 tremors have been detected since the quake first hit, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, which warned that more strong shocks could hit in coming days.

“The government has deployed emergency rescue teams from the Self-Defence Forces, police and fire departments to the area and is doing its utmost to save lives and rescue victims and survivors, but we have received reports that there are still many people waiting to be rescued under collapsed buildings,” the prime minister said.

    • Japan nuclear plant sees rise in water level after massive earthquake

The water-level around the Shika nuclear power plant rose by around three meters following a massive earthquake that hit Japan on Monday, authorities said on Wednesday.

According to the Hokuriku Electric Power Company, which operates the plant, the seawater level at the intake spot “had been three meters (9.8 feet) higher than usual between 5.45 p.m. (0845GMT) and 6 p.m. (0900GMT) on Monday,” Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported.

The plant uses seawater for cooling purposes.

However, the two reactors of the facility were already taken off long before the magnitude 7.6 tremor hit Japan at around 4.10 p.m. (0710GMT) on Monday in Ishikawa province.

The epicenter of the earthquake was the Noto region, where the plant is located, in the province facing the Sea of Japan.

A four-meter-high (13-feet-high) seawall “installed to protect the No.1 reactor was tilting by several centimeters,” the operator found.

Electricity supplies to the plant also suffered breakdown, which led to non-functioning of some systems.

The pipes of transformers supplying electricity from outside the facility were damaged due to the earthquake which led to oil leaks.

The operator is working to restore the systems, retrieve the leaked oil, and is using other means to supply electricity to the critical equipment.

At least 64 people have been declared dead due to earthquakes which hit Japan since Monday.

Many people are still stuck inside collapsed buildings while several areas are still cut off. Tens of hundreds of people have been left without electricity.

At least 73 people were killed in the powerful earthquake that jolted the Noto Peninsula and surrounding areas in central Japan on New Year's Day as rescuers raced against time to find and pull more survivors from collapsed buildings, amid chilling temperatures.

Two days have passed since the magnitude-7.6 quake caused extensive structural damage and fires in the city of Wajima in Ishikawa Prefecture on the Sea of Japan coast, but the full extent of the disaster remains unknown.

Rain added to the difficulty of the rescue operations already impeded by debris and severed roads.

Japan's Self-Defense Forces were set to use helicopters to deliver supplies to cut-off areas, with local authorities asking the central government to send SDF personnel for a disaster relief mission.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said at a press conference on Wednesday that the government had decided to increase the number of SDF members working in the stricken region from 1,000 at present to 2,000.
