Former Olympic boxing gold medallist Somrak Kamsing has denied charges of sexual assault, filed against him by a 17-year-old girl in the north-eastern province of Khon Kaen.

The allegations were reported to Mueang district police on Monday by the girl, who claimed that she met with Somrak at a night entertainment venue on Sunday night and was then lured to a hotel, where he sexually assaulted her, according to a Facebook post by well-known TV talk-show host Sorayuth Suthassanachinda.

Somrak has appointed a lawyer to defend him, as he insiststhat he did not rape the victim as alleged, citing CCTV footage as evidence.

A Thai PBS reporter spoke with the accuser’s grandfather in a village in Nong Kung Si district of Kalasin province. The old man said that the girl had told him that she and some classmates travelled to Khon Kaen to attend a university entrance examination, adding that he was shocked when told that his granddaughter had been sexually assaulted.

Meanwhile, the village headman claims that the girl is a good student, representing the school in some national competitions and performing community services.
