Thais are getting taller it is official

Have you ever thought that Thais are getting taller as the years go by? Well now it’s official: The Public Health Ministry has raised its standard height for Thai children, men and women.

The development criteria for children aged 6-19 have been adjusted upwards from the standards used since 1995, said Deputy Public Health Minister Satit Pitutacha.

The decision was made because the latest generation of Thai children was outgrowing the previous standard for both height and weight. Under the 1995 standard, the average height of Thais at age 19 is 165 centimetres for men and 159cm for women. According to the new standard the average height five years from now (2026) will be 175cm for men and 162cm for women. In 15 years (2036), Thai men will average 180cm and women 170cm.

The new growth criteria will be supported by information on correct nutrition and exercise to strengthen joints and increase height, said the ministry.

I remember reading or have seen somewhere that people all over the world are getting taller. It has something to do with the management of childhood diseases, and nutrition. .
I remember that while fighting an infection you consume more nutrients as your metabolic rate increases, at the same time your nutrition intake decreases resulting on inhibited growth for that period.
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

^ For sure. If you go in to an old pub in the UK you will doubtless twat your head on the door frame as you enter. I think the average UK height in Victorian times was a few inches lower than today.

And Thais are definitely getting taller... my daughter never seems to stop growing and her feet are getting bigger as well I've noticed. It's costing me a bladdy fortune.

^ Hopefully, her feet don’t get too large as there is a dearth of women’s shoes over size 40 in Thailand! Don’t know when the shoemakers will take the hint and make some nice shoes in larger sizes for those tall gals.

Tell me about it, my eldest is 16 and has size 11 feet already.

I must have spent £600 on footwear for my three in the last year
