British Man Saved by Authorities After Attempted Suicide at Abandoned Pattaya Condo

A 60-year-old British man climbed the abandoned Waterfront Condo construction site in Pattaya in the early hours of May 23rd in a reported attempt to take his own life.

Pattaya police and emergency services were called to the scene at 1:36 AM today, after security guards spotted the man on the second floor of the abandoned project.

The British man, whose name was withheld to protect his privacy, was seen pacing back and forth on a ledge. Authorities spent over 30 minutes negotiating with the 60-year-old man.

Eventually, authorities managed to convince him to climb down. However, he continued to exhibit erratic behavior, possibly due to intoxication, authorities said. The man was then subsequently brought to Pattaya Police Station for further investigation.

According to security guard Mr. Watcharaphon Khanti, 43, he heard noises on the metal sheeting on the building before spotting the victim. When asked, the victim allegedly stated he intended to commit suicide. Mr. Watcharaphon then contacted the authorities, who were thankfully able to resolve the situation professionally.

The Waterfront Condo project, which includes a 53-story condominium building and a 20-story, 315-room hotel, began construction in 2013. However, construction was halted in July 2014 after it faced many lawsuits from citizens and environmental groups who alleged the project was illegal and blocked the viewpoint from the Pattaya Hill.

In the latest development, the Thai Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases acquitted former Pattaya Mayor Ittipol Khunpluem, along with nine associates, in a case concerning his alleged issuance of an unlawful construction permit to the Waterfront Condo project during his tenure.

The acquittal was issued after the case’s 15-year statute of limitations had lapsed.

Here’s a good news story. Those Thai guards are useful after all. Not that the old father would have been able to kill himself from the second story.

Well unless that near swan dive scared him and he had an epiphany, he will likely try it again. Security guard bought the distressed guy a reprieve for now.

The story is of merit, not for the geriatric ditch digger realising the utter futility of his meaningless existence, but for the revelation that Kunpleume returned from his temporary refuge as a fugitive from justice in Cambodia after the effluxion of time barring prosecution for the charge he faced arising out of the Bali Hai caper.

I wonder if he was one of the people who'd invested his life savings in an unfinished condo and was simply trying to be poetic?

Unlikely, given the passage of time, a decade after any would-be investment. Incidentally,, the project was not stopped by law suits or any such activity, it came about when four photographs published by the Bangkok Post depicted the view of Pattaya Bay from Pratumnak Hill from the 1950s onwards only to be blocked by the rising Waterfront condo. A notable presence nearby made their feelings known and all building ceased overnight. Quite how the project ever passed the environmental impact assessment was a mystery but one that was possibly cleared up when Ittiplume Kunpleume embarked on his sudden temporary tour of Cambodia but has now returned, unblemished.

What a ghastly little country it truly is.

If memory serves, a large condo went up which offered "seaview condos" at a premium, into which a load of farang and Thai eagerly invested.

As soon as the building was completed and sold, the cheeky developer started construction of another one smack in front of it, so the existing seaview condos became "your neighbours shitter and kitchen view condos".

They all went moaning to city hall, but I don't think anything ever came of their complaints.
The next post may be brought to you by my little bitch Spamdreth

It was the View Talay boys down in Jomtien. They built their typical product with sea views and were successful in selling most units quickly and then, as you say, built another in front obstructing the view and devaluing the units in the first project. It went to court and View Talay had to compensate, as I recall.

Thai, well, Thai-Chinese, innit. Devious, underhanded, lying fuckers without any scruples when it comes to grubbing for money and fucking others over.
