Unlike yourself 'arry, I am located in a Thai province that has reported zero virus cases. What is your current country of residence's numbers, an upwards, downwards or flat slope?
Currently no requirement, for a virus free test certificate, is listed in the Thai gazette for long term visa extensions. When it is I will comply as I do every year, with whatever is published and of course the individual TI officer's desires.
Until then I will watch various vaccines performance to deliver what it says on the box. Which currently appears to be very little.

So the head of Public Health in the US is visiting Taiwan, who have done a sterling job containing the virus.

US health chief arrives in Taiwan on trip condemned by ChinaTAIPEI: US Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar arrived in Taiwan on Sunday as the highest-level US official to visit in four decades, a trip condemned by China which claims the island as its own, further irritating Sino-US relations.
Washington broke off official ties with Taipei in 1979 in favour of Beijing. The Trump administration has made strengthening its support for the democratic island a priority, and boosted arms sales.
Beijing, already arguing with Washington over everything from human rights and trade to the handling of the coronavirus pandemic, has threatened unspecified countermeasures to Azar's visit. China considers Taiwan a wayward province, to be brought under its control by force if needed.
Azar arrived at Taipei's downtown Songshan airport on a US government aircraft late in the afternoon, and was met by Brent Christensen, the de facto US ambassador to Taiwan, and by Taiwan Deputy Foreign Minister Tien Chung-kwang.
In accordance with Covid-19 rules, there were no handshakes and all officials wore masks, including Azar, as seen in images broadcast live on Taiwanese television.
Azar is coming to strengthen economic and public-health cooperation with Taiwan and support Taiwan's international role in fighting the pandemic.
On Monday he will sign a health cooperation memorandum of understanding with Taiwan's government and visit Taiwan's Centres for Disease Control.
He is also scheduled to meet President Tsai Ing-wen during his visit.
The 20,000,000th case has been reported.

• Two Belgian resort towns have announced measures to stop day-trippers after beach fights broke out between police and youths told to leave for refusing to respect coronavirus safety measures.
• The UK reported 1,062 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, the first four-figure daily rise since late June and 304 higher than the 758 new cases reported on Saturday. The UK is imposing new local lockdowns in some areas amid worries over a second wave of infections.
• Greece reported its highest daily rise in case numbers since the start of the outbreak. A government official said the 203 new cases takes the total to 5,623.
• Paris will make masks mandatory outdoors in busy areas from Monday for those aged 11 and over, after a rise in cases. The mandatory mask zones will be regularly evaluated.
• The Republic of Ireland reported 174 new cases on Saturday, by far the highest number since May and up from 98 on Friday and an average of 58 per day for the past week. Of the 174 new cases, 118 were linked to the three counties – Kildare, Laois and Offaly – where restrictions were reintroduced on Friday.
• Czechia recorded its biggest daily rise in cases since 3 April, with the health ministry reporting outbreaks in a number of regions. The 323 new cases take the total to 18,060. A total of 389 people have died.
• Germany has added regions of Romania and Bulgaria to its high-risk areas after caseload rises there. Travelers entering Germany will face mandatory coronavirus tests and, if testing positive, a two-week quarantine.
• UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that not reopening schools in September would be "socially intolerable, economically unsustainable and morally indefensible." A recent study suggested Britain risked a second wave this winter if schools open without an improved test-and-trace system.
• Russia reported 5,189 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, taking its tally to 887,536, the world’s fourth-largest caseload. Another 77 deaths pushed the toll to 14,931.
• Germany's cases increased by 555 to 215,891, the Robert Koch Institute said on Sunday. The death toll rose by one to 9,196.
• The UK medicines regulator has ordered the recall of up to 741,000 coronavirus test kits from the national test and trace program as a precautionary measure. The government had already ordered the program to stop using the kits in question, from Northern Ireland-based company Randox Laboratories.

To be fair, it is a bit easier when you're a few small islands in the fok-end of nowhere that no one cares about.

Much depends upon what and how you measure. If you look at UK deaths total for 2020 they were 65,132 higher than the 5-year rolling average, as at June 19th.
Death rate 'back to normal' in UK - BBC News
The government chooses to ignore that number because they don't like it, but it is a hard statistic, we can be sure beyond any significant doubt how many people died, this year and in the past. Although not every one of those 65K people might have died directly from Covid, in the absence of any other explanation it seems fair to say that they died directly or indirectly because of Covid. Some cases weren't diagnosed, some people died because other medical procedures were delayed, etc.
The UK population is a little under 68 million. Divide the 65K excess deaths by the 68 million population and you arrive at about 956 deaths per million.
Not a number I expect to hear from Boris.
Anyway the UK government doesn't like the death count so much that they are thinking of scrapping it.

Yep. That will solve everything.
