20 people have died of Covid in South Africa in the last 24 hours.

    Anyone want to bet on:

    - The variant
    - Their vaccination status?

    However

Coronavirus in Russia: The Latest News

Russia has confirmed 9,986,967 cases of coronavirus and 288,351 deaths, according to the national coronavirus information center. Russia’s total excess fatality count since the start of the coronavirus pandemic is at least 810,000.

Russia on Saturday confirmed 30,288 Covid-19 infections and 1,171 deaths.

Russia has confirmed its first reported cases of the Omicron variant. The new strain was detected in two people who traveled into the country from South Africa, Russia’s consumer and health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said Monday. Another 10 Russians who returned from South Africa have tested positive for the coronavirus and their samples are currently being analyzed to determine the variant, the agency added.

Russia on Friday said it recorded its deadliest month in decades in October, with the total number of excess deaths since the start of the coronavirus pandemic surpassing 810,000.

Covid Crisis Threatens Holiday Season as U.S. Hospital Overflow

(Bloomberg) -- After months of warnings that vaccinations would ward off a Covid-19 disaster, the U.S. is sailing toward a holiday crisis.

Cases and hospital admissions are rising amid a season of family gatherings. Most victims have shunned inoculations. The situation is especially dire in the chilly Northeastern states, but doctors in many places report a grimly repetitive cycle of admission, intensive care and death. There are shortages of beds and staff to care for the suffering.

“We’re in desperate shape,” said Brian Weis, chief medical officer at Northwest Texas Healthcare System in Amarillo, the state’s worst hot spot.

In 12 states and the nation’s capital, the seven-day average of admissions with confirmed Covid-19 has climbed at least 50% from two weeks earlier, according to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services data. The areas with the largest percentage upticks were Connecticut, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., Vermont and Rhode Island.

A little more than 60% of the U.S. population is considered fully vaccinated, generally meaning two shots, according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. That still leaves a large pool of highly susceptible people capable of pressuring hospitals.

In the most recent CDC data, from September, unvaccinated people had about 14 times the risk of dying from Covid-19 after adjusting for age -- a major factor in Covid outcomes.

I'd love to see the formula they used to bring them to that conclusion.

You seem to love those charts OHOH. I think if you provided a young child with a collection of coloured pens they could make some lovely Christmas tree decorations.

    Anyway, keep on 'truckin guy.

They are the numbers published by one company, with data supplied by one internatioally recognised institution.

The same publisher and data provider has been utilised by me for the whole period of the pandemic. If the numbers are "modified" to suit a particular reporting countries propaganda, it would be recognisable.

As the publishing site has many data sets, financial, citizens happiness, trade ...., using it consistently I find illustrates not only new, up-to-date trends but a historic context.

Relying on government's promises, intentions, sound bites .... , not delivered results, is unacceptable IMHO.

My apologies, I had intended to add Thailand to the list. See below for that countries's inclusion.

As China has been the yardstick since the problem was notified to the world, it is one to be compared with.

As your posts illustrates, the graph confirms how different countries governments have been able to manage the issue. In this case the containment of an epidemic.

Thailand similarly appears to have been another country, that has been more successful, than the self declared, leaders of democracy.

They probably counted the number of people that died, checked their vaccination status and then sorted them by age group before comparing them.

I expect such a massively complex calculation is beyond your protozoan intellect.

I assume you're referring to Johns Hopkins. However, they can only work with the data they are given, so when Vlad chops the odd zero off the daily death toll, there is little they can do about it.

All depends whose numbers you believe.

Of course some of those will be patients with other illnesses that have not been able to find a bid in Covid-swamped hospitals.

The UK's coronavirus alert level has been raised from three to four due to the spread of Omicron, the UK's chief medical officers have said.

The last time the UK was at level four was in May.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson will give a pre-recorded statement on Covid on BBC One at 20:00 GMT on Sunday.

Britain Reports World’s First Confirmed Death From Heavily Mutated Omicron Variant

Britain has reported what appears to be the world’s first confirmed death from the heavily mutated Omicron variant of the coronavirus. There have been initial signs that the new variant causes less severe symptoms than the dominant Delta strain—but, making his announcement of the death Monday morning, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that may not be the case. Speaking at a London vaccination clinic, Johnson said: “Omicron is producing hospitalizations and sadly at least one patient has now been confirmed to have died with Omicron. I think the idea that this is somehow a milder version of the virus, I think that’s something we need to set on one side and just recognize the sheer pace at which it accelerates through the population.” The PM then urged people in Britain to book booster appointments. As of Dec. 10, the World Health Organization had received no confirmed reports of death from the Omicron variant.

One person in the UK has died with the Omicron variant of coronavirus, Boris Johnson confirms
Health Secretary Sajid Javid meanwhile warns the variant is spreading at a rate "that we've never seen before" with Covid
In response, England and Scotland have set new targets to give boosters to all eligible adults who want one by the end of the month
But many people are already reporting issues with the booking system, which the NHS says is facing very high demand
Free lateral flow tests appear to have run out for people to order online but Johnson says there are "ample supplies" in pharmacies
Meanwhile, people in England should now work from home if they can, as more Plan B guidance comes into effect
Another 48,854 infections and 52 deaths recorded in the UK on Sunday

Was listening to an SA doctor on the Beeb today. He said it's worth mentioning that if you wanted to compare the graphs in @12701 with the UK, you'd have to multiply the cases by 63, as that's a representation of the the difference in testing rates.

So as much as hospitals have to be on the alert, it really might be a cloud wtih a silver lining.

No mention of the age of the individual. Almost 50,000 is a very large number for a country of 70 million people, and I always thought the Brits were doing well with the Co-vid. I fear what may happen when the massive numbers hit North American shores, whether our medical infrrastructure will cope. Definitely time for cooler heads to prevail, Boris seems alarmist.

The land of the free and the home of the terminally fucking stupid.

The United States passed another grim Covid-19 milestone Monday, as more than 800,000 Americans have now died from the virus that's plagued the country for nearly two years.
There have been at least 800,156 confirmed deaths traced to the coronavirus, according to a rolling tally by NBC News.

U.S. sets somber record as Covid deaths surpass 800,000, more than any other country
