Why the Swedish Model for Fighting COVID-19 Is a Disaster | Time

They ,or systems like theirs, gave us the New strain of Covid. The problem with herd immunity is that every time there is an infection there is a chance of a mutation. Allow a virus to run wild among a population and you obviously have more infections and more chances of a mutation.
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

“the Swedish situation remains favorable,” and that the country’s response has been “consistent and sustainable.” Well that is a quote, and then "Behold" they find out they have more positives when they do more testing. Average daily cases rose 173% nationwide from Sept. 2-8 to Sept. 30-Oct. 6 and in Stockholm that number increased 405% for the same period. Though some have argued that rising case numbers can be attributed to increased testing, a recent study of Stockholm’s wastewater published Oct. 5 by the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) argues otherwise. An increased concentration of the virus in wastewater, the KTH researchers write, shows a rise of the virus in the population of the greater Stockholm area (where a large proportion of the country’s population live) in a way that is entirely independent of testing. Yet even with this rise in cases, the government is easing the few restrictions it had in place.

^ LET THIS SINK IN. Yet even with this rise in cases, the government is easing the few restrictions it had in place. So 58.4 death per 100'000 in October, and now it's been a few months since they "relaxed" the restrictions, I wonder the the ratio is in Jan 2021?

‘Tipping point’ of the pandemic: WHO says 22 European countries have new Covid-19 variant

    7 Jan, 2021 16:01

The WHO’s regional director for Europe has warned that European nations are at a dangerous point in the pandemic and has called on leaders to “intensify” their efforts to tackle the virus.

“We remain in the grip of Covid-19 as cases surge across Europe and we tackle new challenges brought by the mutating virus,” said Hans Kluge, the WHO’s regional chief for Europe.

This moment represents a tipping point in the course of the pandemic.
Kluge added that the new variant of the virus, which might be up to 70 percent more transmissible, has already been detected in 22 European countries.

The regional boss says it is necessary for European leaders to once again “intensify” their fight against the virus.
“The virus is getting better... and we need to do that too,” added Catherine Smallwood, a senior emergency officer at the WHO, explaining that bringing down transmission must be the priority.

Despite the already bleak forecast, Kluge said he anticipated cases number to continue to increase, noting the impact of family gatherings at Christmas and falling test numbers over the festive period."

Well done Tanzania for scrapping dual pricing!

Dar es Salaam — The ministry of health has announced changes in charges of testing Covid-19 for all travelers leaving the country with immediate effect. According to a communiqué issued by Health minister Dr Dorothy Gwajima everyone testing for Covid- 19 will now have to pay Sh230,000 or $100 irrespective of whether they are nationals or foreigners.

    Oh.

This is opposed to the initial arrangement where Tanzanians were required to pay Sh40,000, whereas residents were paying 70,000 and foreigners were required to pay $100.

Hunt for fake vaccine fraudster who injected woman, 92, in Surbiton

A fraudster claiming to work for the NHS injected a 92-year-old woman with a fake Covid-19 vaccine, City of London Police has said.

Detectives are hunting the man who charged the victim in Surbiton, south-west London, £160.

Police said it was "crucial" he was caught as soon as possible as he "may endanger people's lives".

Det Insp Kevin Ives described it as a "disgusting and totally unacceptable assault".

It comes after the NHS warned people that no-one should be turning up at doorsteps offering a vaccine for payment, following a spate of fake text messages.

Under the current coronavirus vaccine rollout plans, people will be invited to receive the vaccine by their GP or healthcare provider.

    'Dart-like implement'

Police said the victim allowed the man into her home on the afternoon of 30 December after he said he was from the NHS and there to administer the Covid-19 vaccine.

She said she was jabbed in the arm with a "dart-like implement" before being charged £160, which the man said would be refunded by the NHS.

Police said it was not known what substance, if any, was administered, but the woman had been checked at her local hospital and showed no ill effects.

Det Insp Ives appealed for information to help identify the suspect.

He added: "It is crucial we catch him as soon as possible as not only is he defrauding individuals of money, he may endanger people's lives."

The man made a second visit to the woman's home on 4 January, when he asked for another £100, police said.

Officers released CCTV footage on Friday of a man dressed in a navy blue tracksuit with white stripes down the side, who they want to speak to in connection with the incident.

He is described as a white man in his early 30s, who is about 5ft 9ins (1.75m) tall, of medium build, with light brown hair that is combed back. He speaks with a London accent.

A spokesman for the Department of Health said: "NHS England will never ask for bank details, Pin numbers or passwords, when contacting you about a vaccination.

"You will never be charged for the vaccine."

Thailand - Vaccination to kick off next month in 5 ‘red zone’ provinces

Nationwide Covid-19 vaccination will begin in February and target the five “red zone” provinces now under lockdown, the government announced on Friday.

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) said residents of Samut Sakhon, Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat would be inoculated from February to April. Most people in Thailand would get Covid-19 shots by the end of this year, it added.

DDC director general Opas Karnkawinpong said the vaccination timeline had been set after health agencies passed the vaccine as safe and effective. He did not mention the name of the vaccine, but Thailand has so far secured 63 million doses from AstraZeneca and Sinovac Biotech.

Opas said Thailand’s vaccination programme will be divided into three phases.

The first phase of 2 million doses will be rolled out in the red-zone provinces from February to April.

The second phase of 26 million doses will target at-risk people – medical personnel and seniors – from May to June.

The third phase will roll out vaccination for the general population by the end of this year.

At-risk people can register for vaccination from the end of January to the beginning of next month, said Opas.

Moderna becomes third Covid vaccine approved in the UK

A third Covid vaccine has been approved for use in the UK.

It is made by the company Moderna and works in a similar way to the Pfizer one that is already being offered on the NHS.

Supplies of the new jab are not expected to be available until the spring however. The UK has now pre-ordered 17 million doses.

Around 1.5 million people in the UK have had at least one dose of Covid vaccine so far.

That includes almost a quarter of those aged over 80 in England.

Vaccines are being given to the most vulnerable first, as set out in a list of nine high-priority groups, covering around 30 million people in the UK.

Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock said: "This is further great news and another weapon in our arsenal to tame this awful disease."

The UK had originally ordered 7 million doses, but has increased it by 10 million to get even more people immunised as quickly as possible.

Vaccine Deployment Minister Nadhim Zahawi said: "The NHS is pulling out all the stops to vaccinate those most at risk as quickly as possible, with over 1,000 vaccination sites live across the UK by the end of the week to provide easy access to everyone, regardless of where they live.

"The Moderna vaccine will be a vital boost to these efforts and will help us return to normal faster."

How does the Moderna jab compare with the others?

The Moderna vaccine requires temperatures of around -20C for shipping - similar to a normal freezer.

In comparison, the Pfizer/BioNTech one requires temperatures closer to -75C, making transport logistics much more difficult.

The AstraZeneca jab is easier to store and distribute, as it can be kept at normal fridge temperature.

All of these vaccines requires a second booster shot.

In trials with more than 30,000, the Moderna vaccine offered nearly 95% protection from severe Covid.

NO one knows where it came from. Initially there was a single mutation . They know where the mutation reproduced and multiplied, but they don't really know where it first mutated.
Chances are it mutated where there ware alot of mutations,
would you agree with that? And Sweden with it's herd immunity policy had a lot of chances for mutations.
It is fair to point out that the UK also had a herd immunity policy for a while, and that it has six times the population of Sweden , so who knows? (no pun intended) Heck it would had been a traveler from the US that brought it to the UK and there it found a fertile ground, or anywhere else.
The point is that herd immunity nonsense not only does not work on it's own as exhibited by those who tried it, but provides fertile ground for mutations that no one might have immunity from and could put us back on square one
If you can take anything from what I said is:

"Herd immunity provides fertile ground for mutations that no one might have immunity from and could put us back on square ane " and stop playing the blame game. We might be able to guess, but nobody really knows where the first mutation came from. The plame game creates a defensive environment among players that does not foster cooperation.

A further 1,325 people have died in the UK within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test - a new record.

Another 68,053 new cases have been recorded - the highest daily figure since mass testing began.

It comes as a third Covid vaccine received emergency approval for use in the UK.

The government has pre-ordered 17 million doses of the jab, made by US firm Moderna, which joins Pfizer and AstraZeneca jabs in being approved.

Friday's daily figures showed 619,941 tests were conducted in the 24 hours to 09:00 GMT.
