    Nothing wrong with a little natural culling now and again, especially when it's directed toward the appropriate parties.

    Hmm… Antibody Testing and Herd Immunity

    Article redacted to condense post – interested? See link

    Hundreds of thousands in L.A. County may have the coronavirus, study finds
    By Melanie Mason, Los Angeles Times 5 hrs ago

    Hundreds of thousands of Los Angeles County residents may have been infected with the coronavirus by early April, far outpacing the number of officially confirmed cases, according to a report released Monday.

    The initial results from the first large-scale study tracking the spread of the coronavirus in the county found that 2.8% to 5.6% of adults have antibodies to the virus in their blood, an indication of past exposure.

    That translates to roughly 221,000 to 442,000 adults who have recovered from an infection, according to the researchers conducting the study, even though the county had reported fewer than 8,000 cases at that time.

    "We haven't known the true extent of COVID-19 infections in our community because we have only tested people with symptoms, and the availability of tests has been limited," study leader
    Neeraj Sood, a professor at USC's Price School for Public Policy, said in a statement. "The estimates also suggest that we might have to re-calibrate disease prediction models and rethink public health strategies." ... (continued)

    Yea, last numbers I heard were USD $50-55/bbl breakeven for US oil production.

    Blurb on CNBC one of the oil company CEO's saying their storage facilities were/are at 95% capacity and will be full in a day or two. Yet - oil is still being pumped. Supply chain is shut down with order cancellations from airlines and transportation.

    So, collateral damage in the energy industry. I'd like to here from our offshore working posters here - what are they seeing and hearing from corporate concerning their future assignments?

    Good luck to you all.

    Coronavirus kills up to twice as many men as women and the reason is in our genes

    The COVID-2019 Thread-363004-3x2-940x627-jpg

    How sick you get from coronavirus is strongly influenced by gender.

    All over the world — in China, Italy, the United States and Australia — many more men than women are dying from COVID-19.
    Why?
    Is it genes, hormones, the immune system — or behaviour — that makes men more susceptible to the disease?

    I see it as an interaction of all of these factors and it isn't unique to the SARS-Cov-2 virus – the different response of men and women is typical of many diseases in many mammals.

    ^in relation to the two X chromosomes:

    Women also have a stronger immune system/ less susceptible to disease because of the female hornones that we produce: estrogen & progesterone.

    I've once heard/ read that, for example, 2 individuals of the same age, e.g. 35 years old - the 35 y.o woman would be generally healthier (in terms of heart, lungs, BP, kidneys, etc) than a 35 y..o male. I think in the lecture, the lecturer (medical doctor) said that before menapause, the biological age/ immune system of a woman would be ~10 years younger than that of her male counterpart.

    But when when menopause starts kicking in (late 40s to early 50s), then the woman doesn't produce those female hormones anymore, so a 50 year old woman's immune system would be the same as a man's.

    But, of course there are factors like smoking, drinking alcohol, eating habits, exercise, stress, etc. In the PI, generally more men smoke & drink than women, especially among older people, even among my age group. For the millenials, I think the smoking/ drinking evens out among men & women.

    Case in point: my parents. My dad had a stroke at 58, and died at 71 years old a few years ago (heart attack). He was hypertensive, diabetic & overweight when he had the stroke. He used to drink alcohol, but stopped a few years before his stroke. My mom is still hale & hearty (70s), aside from some memory gaps, general weakness & old age issues.

    ++++++++

    In the cases of China & Italy, I think it was pointed out in this thread before that there are many male smokers in both countries.

    @d48 - thanks for the article, it was a good read

    Seems Turkey is likely playing the COVID squeeze game, see what they can extract.

    RAF plane sent to pressure Turkey to release gowns for NHS

    British government reacted desperately to delays in securing urgently needed supplies of personal protective equipment from Turkey on Monday evening, dispatching an RAF plane in an attempt to force Ankara to release them.

    The plane, one of three that have been waiting to be dispatched to pick up the shipment of 400,000 protective gowns for NHS staff, took off from RAF Brize Norton on Monday despite earlier ministerial assurances that the matter was on the brink of being resolved.

    By the time the flight took off there was no indication from the Turkish authorities that the equipment had been approved for export.

    ............. not just the UK affected....

    Along with many countries, Turkey has banned the export of PPE and other vital medical supplies without government approval, leading to several cases of lengthy delays.

    The shipment was originally due to arrive on Sunday, the third such shipment to arrive from Turkey this year.

    Turkey’s presidency did not immediately respond to several requests for comment on the reasons behind the delays in allowing the equipment to be picked up.

    According to the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, an order of 200,000 Turkish-made masks was held up for 17 days last month until Italy’s prime minister, Giuseppe Conte, raised the matter in a phone call with the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

    On 3 April the Spanish government accused Turkey of holding on to a shipment containing dozens of respirators, citing efforts by Turkish officials to shore up their own supplies amid the coronavirus pandemic. The shipment was released the next day after Ankara agreed to exempt the cargo from the export ban.

    Five million masks sold by Turkish companies to Belgium before the export ban were also delayed, leading Belgium’s health ministry to file a criminal complaint.

    Turkey, a major medical equipment manufacturer, stepped up production when the Covid-19 outbreak reached neighbouring Iran. Turkey did not confirm its first case until 11 March. Since then the rate of infection in the country has become one of the highest in the world.

    The local news outlet Hürriyet quoted the interior minister, Süleyman Soylu, as saying authorities would seize factories if companies did not agree to sell medical supplies on an exclusive basis to the health ministry.

    Ankara has also sent PPE aid shipments to Armenia, Libya, Israel, the Palestinian territories and several Balkan states.

    @toot -

    Lol. I can say that I'm healthier than some male colleagues of the same age, or and some younger. Every year, we have an annual medical exam & we usually compare results. I usually pass it with flying colors. If any of the test results are off, you're considered in the "honor roll" and get to consult with the office physician before the rest of the healthy ones. The doc will advise you to make lifestyle changes, etc.

    Some of my colleagues in the same age group have hypertension, diabetes or weight issues already. The husband of a colleague (both younger than me) - has high BP. He's not overweight but on the slim side, but he's taking meds for hypertension already. In his case, it's genetic - his parents are hypertensive too. Diet also plays a role - traditional PI foods are very pork-heavy.

    +++++

    Re: covid in PI, they're beginning to do mass testing, so it's expected that the numbers will rise.

    I find the worldometers site useful, in terms of numbers of tests made per million of the population. PI lags behind in testing, so the covid cases are surely underestimated.

    Edit : I'm adding a link to an article which states why women have higher immunity against viral diseases.

    A former senator in PI, Heherson Alvarez, died of COVID. He was 80. Both he & his wife got infected with it (no travel history). Wife is 76 years old. Wife recovered and got out of hospital recently.

    Former senator, activist Heherson Alvarez dies from coronavirus

    According to the interview with the son, his father was health-conscious, always exercised, and had mild hypertension only.

    When his parents were admitted, his mom had worse symptoms (mild pneumonia). His mom is also a cancer survivor, with lots of maintenance meds, so she's more at risk. The parents' situation both got worse, as both were intubated. However, his mom recovered while the dad passed away.

    Interview - son of Heherson Alvarez. It's in Taglish. He said COVID was a traitor (traydor) illness.

    This is to illustrate a case of both senior citizens getting the disease - the woman recovered but the man died.

    +++++

    A long read, but it says how female hornones confee higher immunity to viral diseases. But says that females are also more prone to auto immune diseases like Lupus.
