This covid shit is getting tiresome.

A friend of my mum indulged in her 1 hours exercise last week, although she's never seen fit to exercise before in her life.
Long story short, falls and breaks her arm. Ambulanced to hospital and catches Covid 19.....madness!

Science journal Nature issues apology for associating China, Wuhan, COVID-19

"Nature, one of the world's top scientific journals, issued an editorial on Tuesday apologizing for associating the novel coronavirus with Wuhan and China in its news coverage.

It also appealed for people to stop the stigma around the disease because it fuels racism and discrimination against Asian people, which undermines their willingness to study and work in foreign universities, institutions, and other scholarly enterprises.

In February, the World Health Organization announced the disease caused by the novel coronavirus would be called COVID-19. "The WHO was implicitly sending a reminder to those who had erroneously been associating the virus with Wuhan and with China in their news coverage — including Nature," the editorial said.

"That we did so was an error on our part, for which we take responsibility and apologize," it said. But as countries struggle to control the spread of the virus, a minority of politicians are sticking with the outdated script and insist that China bears responsibility, it said. ...."

Taiwan Condemns 'Groundless' Accusations It Attacked WHO Chief

    By Reuters

    • April 8, 2020

TAIPEI — Taiwan's Foreign Ministry on Thursday condemned "groundless" accusations from the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) that racist slurs against him had come from the island, as Taipei escalated its feud with the body.
Taiwan's lack of membership of the WHO, due to pressure from China which claims the island as its own, has infuriated the Taipei government during the coronavirus outbreak, which says it has been unable to get timely information and that Taiwanese lives have become political pawns. The WHO denies the criticisms.....

I wonder how Trump will take this.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has abruptly switched its guidance for use of a drug touted by President Donald Trump as a possible treatment for COVID-19, dropping its reference to anecdotal dosages to say simply that there are no approved drugs for dealing with the disease.

The CDC's online advice for hydroxychloroquine was updated April 7, three days after Reuters reported that the CDC was offering what the news agency called "highly unusual guidance" for the drug's use based on "unattributed anecdotes rather than peer-reviewed science."

The updated, and shortened, guidance says simply that "hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine are under investigation in clinical trials” for use on coronavirus patients and "there are no drugs or other therapeutics approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to prevent or treat COVID-19."

The CDC originally told Reuters that the earlier guidance was crafted for doctors at the request of a White House coronavirus task force, which had urged prompt action.

Here's another 1 month comparison - as you can see, with time, the compound effect means the growth is greater than the x10 per month that we were seeing about a week ago.

This will continue for quite a while as the likes of Brazil, India, Africa grow.

No link, AO, but I talked to a Thai friend this morning who was complaining how stupid Thais are for believing farangs are responsible for coronavirus. She said fake news is spreading fast.

^^agree. Just breathing & being in hospital these days feels like the Dementors are all around you.

I found this news clip interesting. The dad was the one who got it worst - had to be intubated for 17 days. Both sets of grandparents also had it, but fared better than the dad. Maybe he had other health issues? The kids also had it - they said they felt really unwell & couldn't get up from bed.

Any update on the 24/7 Pty lockdown? - just got a call saying they realise it's another cocked up useless measure and it's been called off, well, less the cock up bit.

I reckon our glorious leaders should go party for the next couple of weeks, get really sozzled and we can let them know when this is over.

"A family of 10 who attended a birthday party celebration have been hit with COVID-19. Kelly Dewan says her husband Mike Dewan was stricken the worst. He was put on a ventilator at a Philadelphia hospital for 17 days. Kelly, Mike, their four daughters, and all four grandparents were infected with the coronavirus after attending the party. Mike has since recovered, and was treated with remdesivir, though he can’t be certain his recovery was due to that"

If tRump had been Captain of the Titanic:

"There isn't any iceberg. There was an iceberg but it's in a totally different ocean. The iceberg is in this ocean but it will melt very soon. There is an iceberg but we didn't hit the iceberg. We hit the iceberg, but the damage will be repaired very shortly. The iceberg is a Chinese iceberg. We are taking on water but every passenger who wants a lifeboat can get a lifeboat, and they are beautiful lifeboats. Look, passengers nee
d to ask nicely for the lifeboats if they want them. We don't have any lifeboats, we're not lifeboat distributors. Passengers should have planned for icebergs and brought their own lifeboats. I really don't think we need that many lifeboats. We have lifeboats and they're supposed to be our lifeboats, not the passengers' lifeboats. The lifeboats were left on shore by the last captain of this ship. Nobody could have foreseen the iceberg."

@ohoh - since the dad is out of hospital now, after 17 days, I would guess that the family had the birthday party in early March, when the US govt (and most of their people) wasn't thinking it was a big deal. So they thought they had it under control. Heh - they were warned but didn't heed the warnings.

Early March - remember the spring breakers in Florida and Mardi Gras in New Orleans? Now both places are increasing in numbers of positive cases. Not as high as NY, but soon will be.

I found it interesting that in New Orleans / Louisiana, the state is only ~30% black, but now they're finding ~70% of deaths are black ppl. They attribute it to higher obesity rates, lower incomes, less access to health care, etc.

I find it strange that in the US, poor ppl are fat/ overweight. In most parts of the world, poor ppl are stick thin....

I've listened to some of this guy's vids - Viet immigrant to the US. He mentioned being a boat person. He's now a doctor (surgeon) and has loads of covid-related vids. This one is about obesity.

    PATTAYA LOCKDOWN LIFTED

Yesterday saw one of the worst traffic snarls Pattaya has ever experienced as residents spent hours stuck in their cars waiting to present their papers to the authorities to get permission to enter Pattaya where they live and work. A majority of the people did not even have the necessary papers nor knew what it was about.

The 5 checkpoints were meant to control the flow of people in and out of Pattaya so as to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) amongst the residents and tourists.

Having seen that the blockade plan was not going as smoothly as expected, Banglamung District Chief Amnart Charoensri and Pattaya Mayor Sonthaya Khunplome convened an urgent meeting at 7 p.m. last night to discuss the serious matter.

Katie, although not confirmed there is some discussion in the UK that ethnic minorities are at higher risk. Thing is it could be where the clusters are and nothing to do with genetics, its just too early to tell. The Men v Women thing though seems to carry more credence atm.

The Beeb reporting a significant rise Germany who seemed to diverge from the rest of Europe regards infection vs death rates, although for the number of cases their death rate is still at odds with other countries.

The number of confirmed infections in Germany has risen by 5,323 over the past 24 hours to 113,525.

That's the fourth straight day of the numbers going up after there had been somewhat of a decline before that.

The reported death toll rose by 266 to 2,373. These numbers are from country's Robert Koch Institute for Infectious Diseases which tend to be lower than the Johns Hopkins data.

The US university has Germany with 118,235 cases and 2,607 deaths.

@toot - I've listened to some vids that in the US, the blacks & latinos are more disadvantaged & predisposed towards CV. Not due to race, but bcos of lower income levels and obesity. Plus, in the US, they don't have universal health care, so ppl without health insurance (usually lly the poor) would rather not go to hospital unless they're at death's door already.

There was a vid that came out (initially, it was a joke, then ppl believed it) that black ppl thought they were immune to CV. That their melanin would protect them. You can search for that on YT. Turns out to be not true - CV does not discriminate whether rich or poor, or race. But in some cases, income levels (and influence) would determine level of health care & survival rates.

This bus driver posted a rant on social media about a woman coughing in the bus. Days later, he died. I couldn't help but notice that he's black & overweight.

A few days later, his wife was interviewed. The wife (and son) are both o/w. I couldn't help but think that if he was wasn't o/w, would he have survived? Not blaming anyone, but this case highlights the need to be in good health to fight off other disrases.

All the discussion about the situation getting worse, what pointers are there to things better better?

    ---

The one COVID-19 number to watch

Helpfully, there’s one number that can tell us quickly and clearly whether the coronavirus outbreak is getting better or worse.

    It’s called the growth factor
    .

The main thing to understand is this — to be sure we’re staying on top of the outbreak, we must keep this number below one.

    The COVID-2019 Thread-screenshot_2020-04-10-if-you-only

And here is how the growth factor for Australia’s outbreak currently looks.

What is ‘growth factor’ and why is it important?

Put simply, the growth factor measures how fast the number of new cases is going up or down.

    And here’s the key point:

    • If the growth factor is above one, the number of new cases each day is going up. If it stays consistently above one, that means exponential growth.
    • If it’s below one, we’re getting the outbreak under control.

All the other data is here ... One coronavirus number will let us know if Australia's outbreak is getting worse - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
