BANGKOK, 20th September 2018 (NNT) - The Meteorological Department has unveiled an earthquake and tsunami detection system that will provide timely alerts to the public.
Director-General of the Meteorological Department Wanchai Sakudomchai today unveiled a high-performance digital seismic information system, the product of a 500-million-baht investment and three years installation. The new system will operate 24 hours a day to accurately detect earthquakes in the country and abroad, as well as tsunamis between five and 14 minutes in advance. The system has a network of 61 stations covering all 14 major fault lines in Thailand. It will also be used to inform urban planning by identifying areas with a high risk of seismic activity, which should be avoided.
The public will be able to receive alerts from the Meteorological Department's website, as well as the mobile application “EarthquakeTMD”.
