NONG KHAI, 5 September 2018 (NNT) – Schools in Ponpisai district of Nong Khai province have announced a two day closure due to the Mekong River being 34 centimeters above its banks and endangering commuters with floodwaters.

Despite a slight drop in the Mekong River’s level in Nong Khai province, the waterway remains 34 centimeters above its banks. With more rains expected institutions such as Baan Pak Suay School have decided to announce a two day closure while the situation is assessed.

In Rattanawabi district of the province, waters have swept into Baan Ta Muang, Baan Tan Chum and Baan Dong Mod Daeng villages, submerging some 30 households in up to one meter of water.

In the province of Bueng Kan, waters have risen so high in Baan Ta Poh village that residents have had to employ boats to travel. Authorities have installed eight water jets to step up drainage but the low-lying geography of the village has made the process slow.
