BANGKOK, 29 May 2018 (NNT) – Natural waterways may be adulterated by accumulated contaminants being washed down from land during an early part of rainy season.
Pollution Control Department's (PCD) Director-General Sunee Piyapanpong advised the general public to be cautious of contaminants in water during the early period of rainy season, as rainfalls will wash down contaminants and pollution accumulated on the land during dry season into the waterways.
The condition may cause sudden changes to the quality of water, including lower oxygen level, high turbidity and suspendible and changes to the water temperature, all of which could possibly affect marine animals and the ecology.
Fish farms may be affected by such changes of the water quality, which could be alleviated by operating oxygen generators and reducing the volume of feeds in order to minimize waste.
According the the annual national survey, the water quality in surface sources during April and June generally falls into the fourth category suitable for industrial use, requiring extra purification prior to consumption.
The PCD chief called upon all sides for help by keeping chemicals used in farming and industry away from the rain, ensuring no leak from wastewater treatment systems and garbage handling facilities, and immediately informing the PCD by calling Hotline 1650 in case of chemical or wastewater leaks.
