BANGKOK: A woman was killed and her boyfriend injured when their motorcycle was hit by a Porsche car on a Bangkok road on Sunday night.

Police said the accident happened at 10.30pm on the inbound Prasert Manukit Road near the Sukhonthasawat intersection in Bangkok's Lat Phrao district. Police said Kalayarat Rod-iam, 21, died at the scene and the motorcyclist, Atcharisay Promsr, 20, was severely injured and rushed to Nopparat Hospital.

The driver of the Porsche 718 Cayman, Surat Atthatip, waited for police at the scene. He told police that the motorcycle changed lane and suddenly cut in front of his car so he could not slow down in time.

Surat said he would provide footage from his dashboard camera to police to prove his account. - The Nation/Asia News Network

Common occurrences in Thailand. So death by natural causes. A dashcam pays for itself, get one.

To give him the chance to later claim it wasn't working at the time.

They don't have the powers to do so, I'd imagine

No, but having been in an accident where my dashcam video came in useful in showing the cops whos fault the accident was I'd say 'get one'.

^ can you buy it for me and I'll pay you back when it pays for itself?

How does yours work Prag? Is it on a loop and does it record your in car conversations for the constabulary and insurance company's future entertainment?

Yes mine works on a 10 minute loop. It can record your conversations or you can program it for mute.

Well worth having, we have had ours now for about 3 years and the insurance discount has more than covered what we paid for it.

To get a proper look at what happened in an incident the card from the camera is put on a computer (police and yours) and the relevant section saved then you and the police both have a copy of the original. This can also be shown to an insurance company should you make a claim.

With my accident it was the insurers agent that took a copy of my SD card and showed it the the police.

Story makes sense. I've seen motorbike riders do stupid things thousands of times. Can't believe some of the zig zags they do. They should be locked up.

    1. The driver stopped
    2. He doesn't appear to be drunk
    3. His partner hasn't soiled herself.

All taken into account, upright Thai citizens.

    Case dismissed.

    It is a good question.

I have occasionally wondered (but never googled) what is the legality of dashcam video if it is your dashcam and you were in the wrong.

Is it your personal property to withhold and avoid self-incrimination or does the long arm of the po-po get first dibs?

Knowing yourself to be in the wrong remove the SD card and put it in yer pocket. Then let the Thai CSI interpret whos wrong and fingers crossed they swing your way. Nothing to lose.
By the way Thai insurers are now giving discounts for having a dashcam.

Prag does seem to have a history of promoting these goddamn dashcams as if they were the end all - they're not.

Your property to do what you will.

Would depend a lot on the circumstances I'd imagine.

At a minimum it would certainly be a bad look if your dash cam / footage conveniently disappeared when you were contending the accident was someone else's fault and at the other end of the spectrum it could be considered evidence tampering and have some very weighty consequences for the act alone.

I bought a dash cam so I could show the family footage from different parts of the world. It's a lazy way to show the scenery. The sound has to be on, so amusing to hear when someone does something unexpected.

As is so often the case in Thailand, a motorcyclist driving without being aware of traffic has a tragic outcome.

Why would they take a Porsche owner's dashcam footage before the incident has even been captured?

What is it that you dislike about dashcams so much? I don't promote them, I just highlight their usefulness when driving in Thailand, where the police are inclined to side with the poor unfortunate retard who has no driving skills, and shouldn't be on the roads.

^It's Jeff, who'd like us all to sell our motor vehicles and use a Buffalo's back for transport. Like he does (in his dreams). Just tell the clueless cvnt to fuck off, he's quite use to that.

Here's 20 mins of mostly dashcam and CCTV footage highlighting why such technology can save your arse if you're in the right and some nimrod decides to commit a random act of fuckwittery that you would get blamed for if no video evidence existed. It's also an exercise for the apologists on (A) How brain dead these people are and (B) How anyone with even basic defensive driving skills could have avoided contact in many situations.
