Govt fostering culture of reading among young children

BANGKOK, 11th February 2018 (NNT) – The Thai government is keen to help young children cultivate a reading habit, so that they grow up into capable and intelligent adults.

As chairman of the National Early Childhood Development Committee, Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Air Chief Marshall Prajin Juntong on Saturday officiated at the opening of a book festival held as part of the government’s effort to encourage people especially young children to read as much as possible.

ACM Prajin said the cabinet had endorsed a proposal to promote public-private cooperation, employing four strategies which are 1) cultivating a reading habit among Thai children, 2) giving people access to books, 3) enhancing reading and learning centers, and 4) fostering a favorable atmosphere for reading.

According to a survey by the Department of Health, up to 30% of young children in Thailand are facing developmental delays including language learning.

Held until Sunday, February 11th, at Makkasan Airport Rail Link Station, the book festival is made up of an exhibition about early childhood development, a story telling zone, and educational activities for children.

Good move, most of the Thai (adult) I know who claims to be readers actually read comics and exceptionally a self development 50 pages book...I only know one person who read novels on a regular basis...

Yeah must be in the wrong circles, but I do know people from various social background (from manual workers to middle ranking officials)

I wonder what the percentage is after they've been through the school system. Higher or lower?

I know lots of Filipinos - twenty-one years worth. Many are bright professionals. I know almost none who read for pleasure. Work-related stuff, yes...but books just to read for enjoyment...very, very rarely.

I recall on the front page of the Bangkok Post a few years ago a Thai poll where locals claimed they read around 5 hours a day....or something ridiculous.
