A predawn fire broke out at Khon Kaen Airport on Friday morning (Jan 26) forcing the airport to close down for several hours.
The fire started at the electricity control room on the third floor of the main building at 5am, according to the Department of Airports’ initial report. Authorities suspected the fire was caused by a short circuit. The fire was put under control shortly afterward.
By 10am today the airport remained closed as airport authorities continued to clear the smoke that still blanketed the passenger terminal and they expected it would take another two hours to finish and the airport to resume service in the afternoon.
The fire forced three arrival fights of Nok Air to land at Udon Thani Airport, about 120 kilometres away, and then passengers were taken on buses to Khon Kaen. Passengers on three departure flights of Nok Air from Khon Kaen to Bangkok were also transported to board the flight in Udon Thani.
Initial examination found that the fire did not disrupt the operation of the air control tower or its power supply system at the airport but affected only the passenger terminal. Khon Kaen Airport later issued an announcement saying that the airport is now temporarily out of service due to an incident of fire and advised those who are traveling through the airport today to contact the airlines.
