Video of dogs butchered at Indonesian market sparks outrage

JAKARTA (AFP) - Disturbing video footage of dogs being butchered and their hair burnt off with blowtorches at markets in Indonesia has prompted howls of protest from animal rights activists.

Campaigners from the Dog Meat-Free Indonesia group are urging authorities to shut down the country's live animal markets, where they say thousands of dogs and cats are bludgeoned to death each week.

Video filmed by the activists at markets in Tomohon and Langowan cities on Sulawesi island shows a stomach-churning array of burnt, mutilated animals - including monkeys, cats and bats - being sold openly.

Among the most disturbing images is footage of dogs being clobbered to death and blow-torched in the street amid the rows of grubby stalls.

Dogs packed cheek by jowl inside tiny cages appear to tremble and whimper as they watch what is going on around them.

Lola Webber, from the Dog Meat-Free coalition, described the market as "like walking through hell".

However, that hasn't stopped it becoming a popular tourist destination.

The group is now calling for the Indonesian government to put an end to the brutal trade.

"The tourist board's slogan of a 'Wonderful Indonesia' rings hollow when you've gazed into the eyes of a dog spattered with blood and shaking with fear," Bobby Fernando of Animal Friends Jogja said.

"We need the world to join us in calling for an end to Indonesia's dog and cat meat trade."

The vast majority of Muslim-majority Indonesia does not eat cats and dogs, but the trade in exotic creatures is booming in some parts of the sprawling archipelago where it can form part of the local diet.

wonder how many of the animal rights people scoff down sheep, cow and pig on a regular basis? There is nothing holy or special about dogs, in fact the more that get eaten the better.

^ I can. It betrays a bond that was made in antiquity. Can't abide a man who mistreats a dog.

Granted...a pet is a friend and trusts you.
Is killing a wild dog "mistreatment"?
(you can see where this will lead). Is the species sacrosanct?

Yeah, pet hogs are becoming quite popular, hoggy.

    Will you be quitting bacon?

Hope you don't have a fish tank either.

Lets first answer the question, "Is ANY species sacrosanct?".

In my mind, any endangered species is off-limits. Then we get to the contentious area of (relatively) intelligent species such as dolphins, monkeys, dogs, which are not endangered.
    Loved pets aside, of course.

My take: If it's an abundant supply of protein or eating enjoyment, then partake of it.
We as humans are, after all, at the top of the food chain.

    Yep. Ditto Horses.

Something really fucked up about a domesticated animal bred from Wolves to guard, herd, and protect protein sources becoming an actual protein source itself.. Or is it just me?

Cheval is sold in French butcher shops all the time.

Lets get to the crux of the matter.
Because a breed or species serves man, does that men none of that breed or species can ever be consumed?

    Sick fuckers.

I don't have an objection to euthanising animals for meat, but beating them to death is simply cruel and barbaric.

'Others of your ilk serve me, so I won't eat you', in other words.

    How hilariously pompous.

    Indeed.
No need for drawn out pain. Disgusting.
But a hammer to the head or a bullet are just as decisive and just as quick. However, a hammer blow can be described by PETA as "bludgeoning to death" and sounds more terrible.

Whenever I see a freshly picked field of strawberries I often wonder how the newly born strawberries feel, being plucked from their mothers stems and dumped into a basket of possibly immigrant varieties.

Heartbroken mother, with bleeding stems, left to die of hunger and thirst. Barbaric.

Some cultures maintain that torturing or painfully killing animals infuses the meat with more flavour..
-The same cultures that revere rhino horns and tiger penises..

something odd about people who drool over dogs, a bond from antiquity that should be broken, they are dirty pathetic animals. Cats are better and at least they have a go at covering their shit up, a dog is more likely to eat it, sniff another dogs arse then lick your face, filthy bastards.

The dogs the Koreans eat are specially bred for their meat.

Quite cute too, but so is lamb

Apparently the adrenalin rush a dog or cat gets when tortured turns the meat inro a potent aphrodisiac. Dog also tastes like mutton, not chicken

As a once-upon-a-time NZ MAF Meat Inspector, I can say for sure that a relaxed animal at time of death produces a more tender meat.

Having eaten dog, I would not say it tastes like mutton. Closer to mutton than chicken, but not mutton. It tastes like dog...if you've ever smelled a wet dog, or a couch that a dog regularly sleeps on...yeah, that's what cooked dog smells like.
Not my cup of tea, but each to his own.

Food species also serve man. As what we classify as acceptable food is a cultural matter it makes no sense to look for a universal answer.
The protests are rarely about species anyway. For some reason the discussion always turns to whether or not its right or wrong to eat a particular species but that's not the real issue, the real issue is cruelty and brutality and these distractions about species do absolutely nothing to help animals that are subject to such cruelty.

^ Agree, you can eat any unendangered species providing it's killed without unnecessary pain.

I don't believe the adrenaline surge is a mean to tender the meat, if you want tender meat you can hit it, keep it much longer in the fridge before cooking, marinate it.
