CHIANG MAI, 6th December 2017 (NNT) - A development project has been launched in Baan Eua Arthorn Pha Ton Community in Chiang Mai province to unclog Mae Kha Canal after construction of several homes was found to have invaded the waterway reserve.
Third Army Region Commander Lt. Gen. Wichak Siripansop presided over the launching ceremony. He was joined by local government officials and representatives of both public and private organizations.
Fifty relief bags were handed out to residents of Baan Eau Arthorn Pha Ton who have been affected by the home removal operation. Some houses had to be torn down because they were blocking the canal.
Mae Kha Canal runs through Mae Rim district, Chiang Mai’s municipality and Hang Dong district where it meets the Ping River. The canal gradually became contaminated due to poor water circulation which was caused by illegal structures in and over the water.
The project is expected to prevent flooding in the city.
