DIT: domestic corn insufficient for animal feed demand

BANGKOK, 25 April 2017 (NNT) - The Department of Internal Trade (DIT) has insisted that the import of wheat and other types of feedstuff ingredients is necessary, as corn supplies are insufficient to feed market demand.

DIT Director General Nanthawan Sakuntanak disclosed that Thai farmers are now able to produce 4.61 million tons of corn for animal feed annually, while market demand is at 7.82 million tons. After considering the facts, the DIT deems it necessary to import wheat and other animal feed ingredients.

Authorities will be adopting a 1:3 wheat import per maize purchase ratio, which requires the import of 100 tons of wheat accompanying the purchase of 300 tons of domestic maize, to help maize farmers who are facing a plummet in maize prices as the Commerce Ministry cannot halt the import of wheat, she said.

In addition, authorities will consider tariff measures on wheat imports so that they will not affect the price of domestic maize, said the DIT Director General.

Taking into account that maize culture requires large amount of water, they should turn to other culture for animal feeding as there are already water supply issues

Just mirroring the practice and patterns of a backward West civilisation.

    Why?
Nothing terribly advanced results from this activity.

Our cows are fed fresh cut grass every day as are the other cows around us. If Thailand had a good beef industry, I could see it, but their beef sucks. Feed them fish heads and rice then.

All animals I saw on my last trip were very thin. The chickens at the market were tough and stringy. And the fish were fishy to say the least. I thought the chickens were way over priced as they mirrored what I would pay for a juicy plumper here. Kind of sad I thought. But on the bright side most of the women were not porkers.
