Thai-Belgian Bridge will be closed to traffic for major repairs and maintenance, beginning Monday.
The major repairs and maintenance will take a total of 58 days, starting from March 20 to May 15.
According to Mr Charoon Meetanatavorn, deputy permanent secretary of Bangkok Metropolitan Admistration, the major repairs and maintenance would make the bridge stronger and safer following a fire on February 28 beneath the bridge that has caused steel structure of the bridge to deform from overheating for several hours.
But to ease expected traffic congestion in the area tomorrow, particularly at Rama 4-Sathorn intersection, outbound lanes of the bridge to Klong Toey will be closed to traffic first for 30 days from March 20 to April 18.
After finishing repairs and maintenance on the outbound lanes, the inbound lanes of the bridge to Samyarn will then be closed for 28 days from April 18 to May 15 for repairs and maintenance.
During the repairs and maintenance period of the outbound lanes, inbound traffic on the bridge will still be permitted for both lanes during the morning rush hours from 06.00 -09.00am, and will revert to outbound lanes during the evening rush hours from 3.00-9.00pm to facilitate traffic out of the city.
For other hours, inbound lanes on the bridge will be reversed for two way traffic.
After finishing repairs and maintenance of the outbound lanes, traffic will be allowed to facilitate traffic flow into the city during the morning and out of the city on the finishe lanes during evening rush hours, and during normal hours.
The repairs and maintenance of the inbound traffic lanes will then take another 28 days from April 18 to May 15.
Meanwhile Pol Maj Kechakat Nilpradab, deputy commander of Metropolitan Police Bureau 5 advised motorists driving on Rama 4 to avoid using the bridge to destination in Bang Na.
He said they should better use expressway road at Saphan Sawang toll gate near Maha Nakhon intersection instead to avoid the bridge, while those wanting to drive to Din Daeng and Chaeng Wattana destinations use expressway from Hua Lampong toll gate.
