BANGKOK, 25 January 2017 (NNT) - The Ministry of Public Health has prepared measures against bird flu with chiefs of six provincial public health departments following the recent bird flu cases in the neighboring countries.

Deputy Permanent Secretary for Public Health M.D. Suwanchai Watthanayingcharoen on Wednesday attended a video conference on emergency response in case of a bird flu epidemic. The public health officials were from the provinces of Nan, Phitsanulok, Nong Khai, Nakhon Pathom, Sa Kaeo and Kanchanaburi.

M.D. Surachai said that Thailand was susceptible to bird flu due to poultry farms in the border zones and cross-border poultry transport. The deputy permanent secretary also warned of free-range ducks and substandard chicken farms which lack biosecurity.

According to statistics, there were 25 bird flu patients from July 2004 - 2006. Most of them had a history of contact with sick poultry as well as the poultry which died abnormally.
