Ubon Ratchathani provincial officials have declared Tambon Song Khorn of Po Sai district Zika-free zone after it was proven that no new Zika cases were reported following the expiry of 28-day monitoring period.

Deputy governor Chatpong Aemasuwan together with the provincial health chief and Po Sai district chief officer jointly announced that Tambon Song Khorn is now free from Zika virus.

On November 23, a resident of Tambon Song Khorn was diagnosed of being infected with Zika virus, but the patient did not develop any complications and he was sent home by doctors.

However, people who are close to the patient and pregnant women in the same village and in the entire Tambon Song Khorn were subjected to blood and urine tests which showed negative results.

The provincial administration has set up an emergency response centre whose task is to check whether there are larvae of striped mosquitos in any household or public places in Tambon Song Khorn.

Once it was discovered that there are mosquito larvae, officials will start spraying to get rid of the larvae to prevent the possible spread of Zika visus.
