PHRAE, 22 December 2016 (NNT) – The Royal Irrigation Department (RID) is pushing on with the royal initiative project to build the Mae Khaem Reservoir in Phrae province, expecting construction to begin next year.
Following the royal initiative of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the RID is gearing up for the construction of the Mae Khaem Reservoir, which will be located in Suan Khuean subdistrict in the capital district of Phrae. The new reservoir is intended to help alleviate flood and drought problems in the area and add another 5,000 rai of local farmland to the irrigated zone.
Deputy Director-General of the RID Somkiat Prajamwong revealed that the department is moving forward with the long-pending reservoir project after it passed the environmental impact assessment and its benefits were found to be worthwhile. He said the reservoir will likely be built within 2017.
The construction plan for the Mae Khaem Reservoir was recently updated, with the enlargement of its foundation to withstand earthquakes. With the edge of the reservoir raised by another two meters, its maximum capacity will increase from the initial 8.5 million cubic meters to 9.5 million.
