The government yesterday denied making “gold colour” commemorative banknotes for sale to the public saying instruction has been given to authorities to take legal action against these opportunists.

The fake commemorative banknotes were reported to be sold at several places in the North, particularly in Chiang Mai at 1,000 baht each.

Spokesman of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) Col Piyapong Klinphan said investigation by local authorities revealed that these commemorative notes were made in China and were smuggled in and sold by opportunists to reap benefits from the sorrow of the Thai people.

The fake notes were printed in a gold colour and have been distributed for 1,000 baht each, he said.

He then asked the people not to buy theses notes, reasoning that it was act of opportunists taking advantage on the sorrow of Thais.

The notes had been spread in Chiang Mai and authorities there were instructed to take legal action against those distributing.
