YaBa to be taken off dangerous illicit narcotics list

Justice Minister Paiboon Koomchaya has proposed that ya ba (methamphetamines) be taken off the dangerous illicit narcotics list and put under the normal drugs category as current measures to suppress the drugs have failed.

However, if and when the drugs are to be taken off the list, all agencies will have to work out measures to ensure that the distribution, sale and use of the drugs are strictly controlled, Gen Paiboon said.

He made the proposal Wednesday at a meeting which discussed the results of the 2016 UN General Assembly Special Session on Drugs (UNGASS), adapting the recommendations to deal with drug problems in Thailand. The Supreme Court president Veerapol Tungsuwan was a speaker at the meeting and he echoed Gen Paiboon's opinion.

    WTF?

"Adapted" suggestions taken from the UN.....yeah, like, changed "marijuana" to "amphetamine".

"Citing medical studies, Gen Paiboon said methamphetamines's effects on health are less harmful than those of alcohol and cigarettes. "
    Again, confusing amphetamines with marijuana.

As said above, it sounds like someone wants to increase his profits and decrease his risks.

The poor army will need to stay in control forever.

    Damn, how unfortunate for them.

I see several countries and even some US states have made it somewhat legal. Meth pretty much ruins people so can't see how this could be good for society. The whole world seems to be turning into a bizarre TV series.

Some have at least done away with useless prison terms for addicts and diverted them into constructive treatment programs instead.

    Thailand considering legalising CRYSTAL METH

Thailand considering legalising CRYSTAL METH as ruling junta's general admits the world has lost the war on drugs

Justice minister Paiboon Koomchaya said current approach had failed
Claimed meth, or ya ba, was less harmful than alcohol or cigarettes
Military junta has previously favoured a zero-tolerance policy to drugs

Thailand is considering legalising meth as the country's justice minister admits they have lost the war on drugs.
Paiboon Koomchaya suggested the highly addictive methamphetamine, known as ya ba in Thailand, should be taken off the dangerous drugs list because it is 'less harmful than alcohol or cigarettes'.
It signals an about turn in policy for the country's military junta, which has previously favoured a zero-tolerance policy, with harsh jail sentences.

Paiboon Koomchaya suggested the highly addictive drug, known as ya ba in Thailand, should be taken off the dangerous drugs list because it is 'less harmful than alcohol or cigarettes'

But speaking on Wednesday, Koomchaya said the current approach was not working, the Bangkok Post reported.
'The world has now surrendered to drugs, and has come to think of how to live with drugs,' he said.
'It is like a man suffering from cancer and having no cure and he has to live a happy life with the cancer.'

Any legalisation of crystal meth would have to be carefully considered and controlled, Koomchaya added.
But his words were met with caution by Prateep Ungsongtham Hata, secretary general of the Duang Prateep Foundation, the Post reported, who said it would increase the number of users.
Thailand is already struggling under the weight of its drug problem.

Two years ago, Koomchaya claimed there were 1.3million drug addicts in Thailand, some 250,000 of whom had been jailed for their habit.
Even then he was advocating looking at different ways to combat the problem.
'The world also agrees that imprisonment is not the answer to convince drug convicts to give up the habit,' he told people gathered at the launch of a rehabilitation programme, The Nation reported.

The Thai army has many decades of drug dealing management and billions $ profit from it. My personal favourite was a few decades ago when the police up North surrounded some army folk carrying a huge quantity of drugs - the Thai army was dispatched, tanks and all (I think the PM was dispatched too), to make sure the army kept their shipment; it's the principle...

Meth amphetamine is obviously a terrible drug that needs keeping off the streets. But, it appears that the junta are just gonna legalize their drug production and dealing operation; total scumbags.

I really hope he is mixing Meth with Canabis in his statements... His points may apply to the later but certainly not to Meth, Meth affect Physical and Mental health... it's a poison compared to canabis, and yes even to alcohol and regular cigarets

People must help fight drug problem: Paiboon

JUSTICE Minister General Paiboon Koomchaya urged Thais yesterday to help think of ways to truly curb the country’s drug trafficking problems.

"When the authorities are unable to suppress illicit drugs, people should find ways to live with it provided such substances don't cause harm to society," Paiboon said, emphasising that the idea to downgrade the threat of 'yaba' he mentioned this week is not yet backed by any clear study.

He said Thai society should voice opinions and ideas on this. He also said society should also reflect on the fact that alcoholic drinks, cigarettes and coffee are being sold freely when they also have psychotropic impacts on users.

After reporting the results of the April 2016 UN General Assembly Special Session to the PM, Paiboon said the world trend suggested that violent crackdowns on the smuggling or use of narcotics may no longer be effective. The change in ideas was a result of studies that showed the ingredients of methamphetamine, cocaine and opium could be used medically, while marijuana was used to treat cancer.

Paiboon said Thailand's past anti-drugs measures focused on destroying manufacturing sources, intercepting smuggled ingredients and arresting dealers. However, most of the people arrested were retailers or individuals hired to carry drugs. This led to overcrowding in prisons and, without proper rehabilitation, they just returned to the vice when they get out of jail.

The Narcotics Control Board had tried to solve the problem, he said, by drafting drug laws and |regulations and was considering legal amendments on the level of punishments for manufacturers, dealers and abusers.
