Baby elephant which saved a British schoolgirl from tsunami has been found

The baby elephant which helped save the life of an eight-year old British schoolgirl, Amber Owen, from a devastating tsunami which struck the western coast of southern Thailand 12 years ago has been located in Kanchanaburi.

Ning Nong, the name given to the baby elephant when it was at a hotel in Phuket, is now an adult elephant and has a new name, Bai Tong. She is now a darling of both Thai and foreign tourists at an elephant’s camp in Saiyok district of Kanchanaburi because she is friendly and tame.

Its new owner, Mr Somnoek Sudchana, said that the original owner in Phuket could not afford to feed Ning Nong as it grew up and decided to send her to his camp.

Ning Nong has been wellknown in the social media for saving Amber Owen from the deadly tsunami when it struck Phuket on Christmas Day in 2004.

Amber Owen who was on vacationing in Phuket with her family was riding on the back of Ning Nong when the giant waves struck the Phuket coast. The elephant reportedly ran toward the high ground and duck behind a high wall until the tsunami subsided.

The incredible bond between Ning Nong and the British schoolgirl inspired Michael Morpurgo’s sequel to War Horse

Cute story, but I think young Ning Nong was saving herself...Like her knew name Bai Tong, though...Wonder if she plays the game well...

Heart-warming story, tsunami, young farang girl, elephant, Phuket, Kanchanaburi, Christmas....all those keywords.....it's got the works.

But like every honest taxi driver newsflash, it's not enough to topple that tiger temple story off the front pages, yes.

(They could've also mentioned the much bigger tsunami that actually happened on the day after Christmas.)

    Must be.
The report incorrectly states that it was on Christmas Day rather than December 26.

"Christmas" ranks much higher in SEO than "Boxing Day", I guess.

Elephants would have heard the rumbling of the upcoming waves, I heard that she wasn't the only one saved this way.

Apparently quite a few were aware of this and many moved toward higher ground
I heard that long before this farang girls story was news

But I suppose this tale captures the hearts

I think it's more than hearing...Animals, especially birds, it seems, have a special "barometer sense" in their head...They feel these "pressure changes" the instant they happen...

When Mt St Helens blew her load I was about 400 miles away, as the crow flies, on a beach in Canada...The Canadian Geese started squawking and circling on the land and spiraled up into the air and headed north to shelter...

I was the only one to notice this strange behaviour...About 35 minutes later, the saplings were bent double in the wind and it poured a tropical rain very briefly...Out of a clear blue sunny sky...Very weird and eerie...

Sure enough, those birds picked up the actual erruption time immediately...Speed of sound?...35 minutes, and 400 miles away...

Christ, a fucking dumb animal allegedly commits an act of self preservation, interpreted as anthropomorphic, which is then publicised by a ghastly sentimental hack writer exploiting his market and, hey presto, the dumb animal is miraculously located in a tourist trap hell hole run by some chiselling chickenhead.

    Whoudda thunk it.

Doubtless there will be a shit film every bit as crap as Warhorse in due course.

BB I think you're right. A knew a few birds with that sixth sense. They could tell when you were going to blow your load before it ever happened.
