BANGKOK, 31 May 2016 (NNT) - The Provincial Waterworks Authority has affirmed that salt water seeping into sources of water will not affect the drinkability of groundwater and has asked the Irrigation Department to release water from dams to reduce the salinity of the Chao Praya River.

Acting Governor of the Provincial Waterworks Authority Chumpol Chokephongudomchai revealed that several sources of groundwater in Bang Pakong, Chachoengsao, Bangcla and Prachin Buri have been foudn to have high salinity levels. However, he remarked that according to World Health Organization standards, water with salinity levels not exceeding 250 milligrams per liter is still drinkable.

He added that the Provincial Waterworks Authority has coordinated with the Irrigation Department in periodically releasing water from dams to reduce salinity levels as well as buying water from the private sector to assist groundwater supply.
