Briton arrested in Cambodia for 'violent rape' of British woman at backpackers hotel

A young British man has been arrested for the rape and assault of a female tourist – also British – at a guesthouse in Cambodia.

Local media reported the 22-year-old victim was left with injuries and bruises all over her body, including a fractured wrist, after the attack.

The Foreign Office has confirmed the arrest and incident and is providing consular assistance to both people.

The incident is said to have happened during a party involving about 20 people at the Arcadia Backpackers, in Kampot, on Friday night.

The 25-year-old man is alleged to have assaulted and raped the woman after they briefly left the party together.

Local media report local police chief Brigadier General Mao Chandara Makthuras as saying she returned shaken, shocked and crying.

He said the victim was unable to talk when asked what happened but then asked two female friends to accompany her to hospital for treatment.

Police questioned witnesses at the hospital and the alleged attacker was arrested at the hostel yesterday afternoon.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: “We can confirm the arrest of a British national in Cambodia and are providing consular assistance.

Do the Cambodians really care about foreigners on their soil ?

He should be sent home and tried where he'd get a longer sentence and hopefully a good few beatings.

If this played out as its reported then this is a very dangerous predator and a psychopath, the sort of person who should never be let loose in society again.

A rather different account of this is reported by the Daily Mail.

British man is arrested in Cambodia over 'violent rape of British woman' | Daily Mail Online

A British man accused of violently raping a tourist who was left with a fractured wrist and bruises has been arrested in Cambodia.

The named locally as 25-year-old Nick Laycock, is in custody after the 22-year-old British woman was raped at a guest house in a commune near the southern town of Kampot.

The commune, made up of several bungalows, is said to have a reputation for drinking and late-night parties.

Police claim that the rape took place while the woman was under the influence of alcohol and that she suffered numerous injuries.

The Cambodian ex-patriate website Khmer 440, in a translation of local media, says the British woman has accused the man of raping her with force on the night of August 21 at around 11pm.

She was at a party at the Arcadia guesthouse complex in Kampot, where he is said to have been working for the past six months, with about 20 friends.

She left for a short time and it was then that she was attacked.

Reports claim she was shaken, shocked and crying and could not talk when asked by friends what had happened. Two women took her to hospital for treatment.

Her friends were questioned at the hospital by police trying to gain more details.

The translation of local media, published on the Khmer 440 site, adds that a hospital doctor said the woman had injuries and bruises all over her body, a fractured wrist and was in a state of shock.

Last night the owner of Arcadia guest house confirmed to MailOnline that the accused man was Mr Laycock and insisted his arrest was the result of a ‘terrible mistake’.

Joel Miles said the young woman involved, despite being vague about the events that night, did not want to press charges.

The man accused of attacking the woman in Cambodia is said to work at the Arcadia guesthouse (pictured)

Mr Miles, an Australian, said Mr Laycock and woman had walked down to the river’s edge where they had consensual sex.

‘Afterwards they were walking back to the bar and because she was a bit tipsy she fell over and hit her head and injured her hand,' Mr Miles said.

‘Nick helped her up and escorted her back to the bar, but she continued on to her room while he stayed at the bar.

‘Then she returned and because her friends knew she and Nick had gone off together to the river and then saw her injuries and how confused she was, they put two and two together - believing she had been raped.

‘They went with her to the hospital and the police were called in. They took statements from the girls, as witnesses, and then it all got worse because the British Embassy became involved.'

Mr Miles said that when he learned the truth of what happened and the CCTV footage backed up Mr Laycock's story, he showed it to the woman's friends and they realised a mistake had been made.

‘The young woman involved also saw the CCTV footage and understood that she had injured herself in a fall,' he added.

‘They all asked the police to have their statements handed back to them, but the police, not wanting to lose face after making an arrest, refused to give the statements back.

‘They still believed the girl had been raped and kept Nick in custody. He’s expected to be in court on Monday.

‘He’s a good guy and the sad thing is that his reputation is going to be tarnished because of this.

‘There is enough evidence to show that he didn’t attack the girl. I am still trying to persuade the police to have those statements withdrawn.’

The Arcadia Backpacker’s guesthouse describes itself as being the only ‘utopia’ in Kampot on its website.

It adds: ‘Owned by three well-travelled guys from Australia, Ireland and England, Arcadia was dreamt up at a rave on the salt flats in Bolivia in 2012.

‘In subsequent conversations the owners continued to travel and plot spanning an impressive selection of locations around the world.

'However, it wasn’t until they all met in Kampot in June 2013 that they knew they had at last found the perfect place to bring their dream to life.’

The rooms are cheap, as most in Cambodia are. They are advertised as being from $1 to $20.

The complex is located 7km from Kampot town and offers a ‘huge bar’, volleyball, DJs, boats, cheap food, ‘booze and plenty to do’.

    he has been freed.

British man arrested for raping UK woman in Cambodia says he is 'greatly relieved' after CCTV footage shows she fell and suffered suspicious injuries after the couple had sex.

Nick Laycock, 25, released after two days locked in grim Cambodian prison.

He was accused of attacking her because she suffered injury to her wrist
But CCTV shows she sustained injuries in fall after having consensual sex
My Laycock told MailOnline: 'I'm relieved. I said all along I was innocent'

A British man arrested for the alleged violent rape of a young English backpacker walked free from a Cambodian court today after prosecutors were shown 'overwhelming evidence' of his innocence.

Nick Laycock, from Slough, spent two days locked in a grim prison cell in the Cambodian town of Kampot after he was arrested at a guest house where he has been working for the past six months.

The 25-year-old was held based on statements from the woman he was said to have raped and two young female witnesses.

Speaking exclusively to MailOnline after his release, Mr Laycock said: 'I'm greatly relieved – I said all along that I was innocent.'

'I said all along I was innocent': Nick Laycock (pictured after his arrest) has been cleared of raping an English backpacker in Cambodia after prosecutors were shown 'overwhelming evidence' of his innocence

'I said all along I was innocent': Nick Laycock (pictured after his arrest) has been cleared of raping an English backpacker in Cambodia after prosecutors were shown 'overwhelming evidence' of his innocence

Mr Laycock was arrested after the 22-year-old British backpacker he was accused of raping went to a local hospital in Kampot with two friends where they told doctors that they 'believed' the young woman had been raped.

This was because she had been seen walking towards the nearby river during the evening with Mr Laycock – but when she returned to the bar later she had a serious injury to her wrist as well as back injuries.

Two women she had been drinking with asked her what had happened and from what she told them they believed she had been raped – and attacked so violently that she had sustained injuries.

After all three women made statements to the police, Mr Laycock was arrested on Sunday.

But then the owner of the Arcadia guest house, Mr Joel Miles, alarmed that a guest had allegedly been raped by a staff member, carried out his own inquiries.

The woman was at a party at the Arcadia guesthouse complex (pictured) in Kampot before she was attacked

His first step was to study CCTV footage – and, he told the Mail today, there was no evidence of the young woman being raped.

'They were seen walking along hand in hand and although they did have sex it was consensual,' said Mr Miles.

According to Mr Miles, the 'victim' had been drinking and after having consensual sex beside the river with Mr Laycock, she fell as she was walking behind him on their way back to the bar.

'That was when she sustained her injuries,' he said.

Dazed from her fall and confused about what had actually happened, it is understood the young woman tried to withdraw her statement in which she said she had been raped.

But the police declined to allow her to recant it.

When he arrived at the Kampot court today, Mr Laycock was told that after prosecutors had studied all the evidence, including CCTV footage, they had decided not to press charges.

If the case had proceeded and he had been found guilty of rape, he would have faced many years in a rat-infested prison.

A relieved Mr Laycock was allowed to return to the Arcadia lodge where other tourists congratulated him on his freedom.

'It was a traumatic experience,' he told them. 'I didn't know what was going to happen to me. A small misunderstanding and it resulted in me going to jail. Two days was bad enough.'

Now staff at the Arcadia have promised him they will work hard at restoring his reputation as a 'good straight up guy.'

Mr Miles told MailOnline that he was furious with the British Embassy who he claimed had offered no support to either the young woman or Mr Laycock.

'They have said they were offering assistance, but Nick didn't see any,' said Mr Miles.

That's not guaranteed anymore in particular "developed" countries, as they've taken the tact of PC and lenient policies of the last couple decades.

Their prisons/jail are overflowing, therefore having to modify this and that.

Having said that, if he was a straight up guy he really wouldn't be taking advantage of a bird so pissed she couldn't even stand up.

That would be rape in the US (and possibly the UK).

People drink and people fuck and neither activity is illigal, just because one or both parties are drunk and fucking doesn't mean a sex crime has been committed or even that anyone has been taken advantage of, unless maybe one of them was so drunk that they were unconscious.

I agree and I am pleased to see a young woman who was obviously the worse for wear, facing up to the obvious when evidence was presented.

Consent in UK rape cases is becoming ever more curious. As the Ched Evans conviction shows, it can be applied somewhat ambiguously when one is convicted and another goes free for the same offence.
I personally think Evans is a dick and got what he deserved even if the law is unclear.

    makes perfect sense to me.

because she was a bit tipsy she fell over and hit her head and injured her hand,
drunk as a skunk, and a bit bow legged after a good seeing to.

    It's already been explained but....
A British man in Cambodia who was accused of rape has been cleared thanks to ‘overwhelming’ evidence found in CCTV footage.
The CCTV recording showed that his alleged victim – a 22-year-old backpacker – had in fact fallen on the way back to the bar, resulting in injuries to her wrist and back.
Nick Laycock, 25, spent two days in a prison cell after he was arrested at a guest house where he works – but prosecutors have now decided not to press charges.
It had been alleged that he raped a 22-year-old backpacker who he went for a walk with by a nearby river because she returned to her friends with wrist and back injuries after having sex with him.
Going on the statements of her two companions, who said they ‘believed’ the girl had been sexually assaulted, Nick, from Berkshire, was detained by police on Sunday.
However, guesthouse owner Joel Miles carried out his own investigations on his CCTV recordings – and saw that the pair had consensual sex but that the girl had fallen over on her way back to the bar, resulting in her injuries.
