A construction worker was crushed to death under tonnes of concrete slabs and roof of the chapel of Wat Ton Choek in Nonthaburi Tuesday afternoon. Another worker was slightly injured.
Rescue workers had to use machinery to pull the body of Mr Natthawut Suwanchairob, 22, a Nonthaburi resident, out of the debris. The other injured worker was taken to nearest hospital.
Police said that nine workers, including Natthawut, were inside and outside the chapel when the roof suddenly caved in and the beams snapped.
It was reported that a committee member of the temple, Mr Manit Boonchaew, hired a contractor, Mr Narongrith Lakthong, at 3.2 million baht to heighten the chapel to escape flooding.
